Questions for a choosing a family practice doctor

A family or general practice doctor cares for the health needs of people of all ages and sexes. Unless you would need to see a specialist for medical care (for example, pregnant women usually see an obstetrician while pregnant) when you go to the doctor's office you will generally be seeing a family practice physician. The following questions should serve as guidelines when looking for a family practice doctor.

  • How do I find a family practice doctor?
There are two ways to do this. If you are uninsured, then do a local search for family or general practice doctors who are licensed to practice medicine. If you do have health insurance, then most likely you will need to select your family practice doctor from a pre-approved list. As always, do some background research before choosing a family care physician. If you are uninsured, then you should call several offices and compare their prices, as some health centers offer discounts for uninsured patients. Before meeting with the doctor you will need to set up an appointment, though if you are sick most offices will try to schedule your appointment as soon as possible as long as you inform them of your illness.

  • What does a family care doctor do?
A little bit of everything. Family doctors provide primary medical care to all individuals. This means that doctors can perform exams to diagnose illnesses, consult with a patient, give medications or preventatives, such as a flu shot, or write prescriptions if needed. Sometimes, however, a family care doctor does not have the means to treat an advanced illness or problem, in which case the doctor will refer the patient to a specialist.

Becoming a doctor of any type is a process that takes a decent amount of time. If you enjoy school, are fascinated with the medical field, and care for the health of others, then becoming a physician is worth it.

In order to be a general practitioner, you must complete four years of undergraduate training, four years of medical school, and one year of a rotating internship. After that you must complete a two to ten year residency to be properly licensed and complete the board certification path from the American Board of General Practice before opening an office.

Family physicians go through the same basic training as their general practice counterparts with the initial nine years of schooling. The residency requirement is three years with a family medicine facility and includes rotations in internal, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry, and geriatrics. The point is to be able to treat the health of people of all ages. In order to be a fully licensed primary clinic doctor, you'd have to pass written cognitive exam.

All doctors have to purchase malpractice insurance before they can prescribe anything to the sick. You'll also need to be familiar with all types of bacteria andvirus infections, including the strain of flu for that year. Once completely licensed, you can work for someone's practice or start your own center. You'll need to hire nurses to aid you and possibly a receptionist to help take appointments. If you wish to do testing on site, you'll need to purchase proper machinery such as x ray, CAT scan and supplies.
