Questions to Ask Appraisers

Appraisals are required in a variety of industries, from auctions to real estate to antique cars. These professionals have many years of experience under their belts and can easily assess what the true value is of a particular object or piece of property. Whether needed for a historic district home for tax purposes, or for a piece of jewelry such as a diamond ring, you can get appraisals quite easily. Some you seek out on your own, such as antique autos, for instance, to determine the value of what you own in case you want to sell it. Other times, it’s mandated by law, such as in the process of buying a home in a particular district. House management, artwork, insurance, and collectibles are just a few of the areas that may require the expertise of an appraiser. But before you hire one to assess your property, you should know a few pertinent questions to ask.

  • What type of appraisals do you specialize in?
You’ll find that many appraisers have specialties; one may work for an insurance firm, while another may focus on commercial land sales. Still others work in the antique car and collectible business, providing market value analysis for private buyers.

  • Do you offer appraisal certificates that verify the value you have stated?
Any appraiser worth his salt will provide a certificate attesting to the value of the item in question, many times for tax purposes. It’s important to choose a reputable appraiser to be sure the certificate is credible and authentic.

  • Do you offer online appraisals?
Many sites these days allow you to submit a photo of your item and receive an appraisal virtually. You may have to register and sign up for an account first.

Appraisers are able to assess the value of an object by comparing it to others like it. Whether it is a home, a work of art or a piece of jewelry, an appraisal will assign it a value based on the cost of similar items which have successfully sold in a similar market recently. In so doing, they will be able to gauge the replacement cost of property for insurance purposes, set a tax value for a district, or set a starting price at an auction house. While appraisers use a mathematical methodology, it is worth mentioning that the value on a certificate of appraisal represents the estimated commercial value of a property or antique, and the price it fetches during a sale may be higher or lower based on market conditions.

Most appraisers are specialized in their work. Those who do appraisals on homes, land, or business real estate will not offer appraisals on cars or other collectibles. This is because an appraisal requires a great deal of expertise in the current marketplace, the history of the items, as well a license to practice, in some instances. Real estate appraisers, whether working for tax districts or management firms, must complete as many as 90 hours of coursework to receive their licenses. Classic auto appraisers must be able to accurately weigh the condition of the vehicle against its scarcity and the current market interest to set a price. Those whose domain of expertise includes diamonds or antiques will often be students of history and will have apprenticed with leading auction houses to learn their trade.

By assigning a value on hard to price items, appraisers help to ensure that sellers and insurance policy holders are properly compensated for their property.
