Questions to Ask When Hunting for Apartment Rentals

There are essentials you should know when it comes to apartment hunting in order to get in the right place for the right price. Ask these simple questions that will lead to beneficial answers.

  • Is there a credit/criminal background check?
Do this before you begin the process of acquiring a rental lease. Negative balances on your credit when it comes to previously rented properties can decrease your chances of getting a nice apartment or cause you to pay extra fees. Criminal history pertaining to theft and sexual offenses also hurts your chances of getting the lease.

  • What are the late fees, moving fee, application fee, deposit, and monthly rent?
Calculate the money you will be spending for your overall move and monthly rental fees. Assessing the deposit includes calculating the pet deposit. Moving companies charge by the room and some college students move furniture at cheap rates.

  • Do you accept Section 8?
You can only qualify for low-income rental assistance if the apartment accepts your Section 8 voucher.

  • What type of living space will I be renting and how many bedrooms are there?
Decide if you are renting a studio apartment, condo, loft or townhouse. Each unit offers different amenities for you to choose from. Some of these units may be furnished and some may not be. A condo can offer some luxury that general apartment buildings can’t. Ask what is considered furnished. Have an idea of how many bedrooms you are looking for and decide if you are willing to settle for a smaller amount or even a studio.

  • What is the atmosphere of the complex?
Current tenants know this. Know that your car is safe at night and your home is safe while you’re away on vacation. Also, ask if the management is friendly and courteous, especially when it comes to maintenance repairs.

Apartment rentals provide housing for an extended period of time. Leasing the house, condo, or room can be weekly, monthly, or longer. You pay the monthly fee for your new home. The landlord usually pays for property repairs, snow removal, and trash. Some will cover heat, water, and utilities.

People prefer leasing for many reasons. College students often hate crowded dorms. Many college students find cheap housing. Everyone has their own bed, but the monthly fees are split evenly to save money. They may not qualify for a mortgage. They may want to save money during a trip by leasing a luxury vacation home rather than pay for a hotel. Low income housing through Section 8 provides housing to those on welfare. Section 8 housing often includes condos and studios.

There are things you should consider before choosing a property. Not every landlord is pet friendly. If you have pets, ask if pets are allowed before you move. Keeping a pet hidden usually leads to eviction or having to give your pet up. Find out if there is a separate bedroom or if it's a loft with an open living space. Find out what amenities are included in the lease. Finally, make sure your furniture will fit and that certain pieces are allowed. Some landlords will not allow waterbeds due to the potential for water damage.

Before signing a lease, make sure you understand the terms. Know if the studio, apartment, or townhouse is furnished or unfurnished. Find out how much of a deposit you must put down. Many landlords require first and last months rent, as well as a security deposit.
