Sports Medicine and Injury Terminology
Athletic glory comes at the expense of physical comfort. Unfortunately, many of these discomforts can turn into actual debilitating conditions as the body continues to strain and put pressure on muscles and joints. Sports medicine is a field dedicated specifically to the treatment of sports related illnesses and injuries. Here is a list of conditions often triggered by athletic exertions:

Concussion: Cranial trauma that can come from both minor and severe blows to the head. Often seen in high impact sports such as football, hockey and soccer, concussions can have long term effects on the sufferer; particularly if he or she experienced repeated concussions. Long term effects include depression, personality changes, loss of memory and poor concentration.

Over Training Syndrome: A physiological condition wherein athletes compulsively train before a competition without proper recovery time, causing weakness and reduced performance. The symptoms include insomnia, nausea, generalized muscle soreness, fatigue, susceptibility to illness and depression.

Tendonitis: An inflammation of the tendon triggered by overuse or over stretching. Tendonitis causes deep unrelenting pain that inhibits comfortable movement.

Bursitis: An inflammation of the bursa, which is a fluid-filled sac which cushions the area between the tendon and bone in the shoulder. This often accompanies inflammation of the tendons of the rotator cuff. This injury is commonly seen in baseball pitchers because of the repeated arm motion.

Bulimia: A condition wherein a person deliberately purges himself or herself of food immediately after eating so that the nutrients are not digested and the body consumes its own fat. Athletes that must maintain a certain body shape or weight, such as gymnasts and jockeys, often suffer from this condition.

Chondromalacia: The damage or deterioration of the cartilage underneath the kneecap, commonly seen in athletes and the elderly. It can be caused by regular wear as we age or can be exacerbated by constant pressure and repeated falls.

Physical Therapy: Training and strengthening the surrounding muscles of an injured muscle or joint in order to facilitate rehabilitation.

Sports medicine physicians can prescribe medicine specific to the sports injury, whether that involves a pulled hamstring, knee and shoulder pain, or a broken bone. They can also refer patients for rehabilitation with a qualified physical therapy professional. They have expert knowledge of the various kinds of sports injuries out there, due to running, jumping, and contact sports.

Sports medicine specialists, like other medical doctors, have gone through medical school, and have chosen to focus on sports medicine in their field. They may work for national league sports teams, local high school sports teams, or independently at a clinic. Some own their own practices. Because most major athletic teams have sports medicine physicians on staff to treat or cure sports-related injuries, doctors in this field often must be on call at all hours to provide health care services in the event of an emergency.

Sports medicine physicians usually focus on injuries to the joints, muscles, and bones, but they may have expertise in areas like cardiac and lung procedures as well. Orthopedics is another focus. As doctors, they should have gentle bedside manners, the ability to stabilize an injury under pressure on the field, and superb technical proficiency in their chosen field. Courses they should have taken in medical school include cardiac rehabilitation, radiology, orthopedic surgery, and respiratory rehab.

Following a full physical examination, the sports medicine doctor will offer a diagnosis, advise on a treatment plan, and prescribe pills and creams accordingly. He or she may have to operate depending on the severity of the athletic injury. Other times, regular physical therapy and rehabilitation is recommended to alleviate the problem. Patients are then advised to inquire about their medical insurance coverage.
