Important Radiology Terms To Know
The field of radiology is a specialty within the medical profession. Radiologists use imaging technology to visualize internal components, thereby allowing diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the body. There are numerous imaging techniques within the radiology sphere used to detect different abnormalities in different tissue types. Here is a list of terms for the different imaging technologies used in radiology:

Radiography: The use of radioactive electromagnetic rays to produce internal images of non-uniform materials and tissues. Radiography has both medical and industrial applications.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Also known as MRI, Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses nuclear magnetic resonance and radio frequency fields to image internal physical structures, as opposed to the ionizing radiation used in X-rays and CT scanning.

Mammography: The use of X-ray technology to explore human breast tissue internally, primarily for the detection of breast cancers.

Ultrasound: The use of high frequency sound waves to visualize the structure of soft tissue in real time.

Nuclear Medicine: The administration of radioactive substances into a patient in order to produce heightened visibility within the tissues of certain organs. In this procedure, radiation emanates from the body, as opposed to being externally applied to the body via X-ray.

Angiography: Also known as arteriography, angiography is an imaging technique used to visualize the internal structure of blood vessels.

Computed Tomography: Also known as CT scanning, Computed Tomography uses X-ray imaging technology combined with digital processing to create a three dimensional internal image of an object.

Teleradiology: The electronic transmittal of radiographic imaging from one location to another.

There are many professionals involved with radiology, ultrasound imaging and nuclear medicine these days. This is a massive field that commonly involves CT scans, PET technology, fluoroscopy procedures, and X-ray imaging. Specialists in this line of work are typically radiology doctors and ultrasound or X-ray technicians. Most of these professionals work in public hospitals and private medical centers. They assist patients with procedures like tumor radiation treatments, radioactive therapy, and MRI scans regularly.

Any time you deal with disease, medicine, and ultrasound technology, there is some level of education required. As you may know, many radiology experts work in the oncology or cancer department of hospitals. This way they can deal with radiological issues, nuclear medicine, CT scans, and X-ray imaging equipment. In order to be a radiology physician, you must first complete four years of college, another four years of medical school, and then a residency at a hospital. This is a very lucrative field that can also be quite rewarding. As for an X-ray tech or ultrasound professional, this is a two-year degree. In this line of work, you are able to work with equipment like MRI machines, X-ray tools, and ultrasound technology all the time.

Any time you get involved with a medical field, you can expect to work with patients on some level. You may also find yourself working alongside pediatric nurses, radiation experts, oncology doctors, and cancer surgeons at times. This is a very diverse field that calls for a lot of research and testing daily.
