Paper and Carton Recycling – Questions to Ask

Recycling and waste management companies now make it easy to recycle paper products, milk cartons, cardboard boxes and other items once considered trash. If you aren’t sure which products are recyclable or how the process works, here are some answers to common paper and carton recycling questions.

  • How can I recycle my paper products?
Many sanitation companies provide recycling bins and will pick up recyclable paper and cartons with the rest of the trash. You can also collect paper and cartons and take them to recycling centers or waste management facilities, which pay cash for items received.

  • What kinds of paper and cardboard can be recycled?
Corrugated cardboard, box board paper cartons and almost any kind of paper can be recycled.

  • What kinds of products cannot be recycled?
Any carton coated with wax is not recyclable. Any cardboard product that comes into direct contact with food is also not eligible for recycling.

  • How does the recycling process work?
Paper and cartons are deposited into a machine called a pulper that shreds the product and mixes in water and solvents. The resulting mixture, called slurry, is then cleaned and reused to make paper.

  • Do products have to be prepared for the recycling process?
Flattening cartons and boxes makes them easier to shred, but is not necessary. Any Styrofoam should be removed, but tape and labels can remain in place.

  • Why is it important to recycle?
Much of the waste and packaging garbage that we dispose of in landfills is made of paper and cardboard that could be recycled. Besides having a positive impact on the environment, recycling lowers manufacturing costs.

  • How many times can a piece of paper be recycled?
Generally, papermaking fibers can be recycled for reuse anywhere from 5-7 times.
  • National Recycling Coalition
The Coalition represents advocates from every region of the country, in every sector of the waste reduction field. Our professional members are dedicated to recycling initiatives and programs.

Paper and carton recycling has become increasingly popular in recent years. More and more people have deciding to stop disposing of their waste products by leaving them out for the garbageman to take to the landfill. They've decided, instead, to be more proactive, and have taken it upon themselves to create and manage a home recycling program.

These home recycling programs can be incredibly effective. Environmentally conscious consumer can use them to manage and dispose of all their recyclable waste. Specifically, they can use them to help recycling centers make the most of the products they've been given.

These savvy recyclers periodically save all of their paper and reusable waste products. They save their milk cartons and other beverage containers. They save their cardboard boxes. They save their scrap paper and packaging paper. They even save their confidential documents, after shredding them first, of course.

Some recyclers know that non-paper products can also be reused, and they save them as well. Specifically, they save aluminum cans, plastic containers, and other more hazardous materials.

They collect these materials in bins and boxes at their houses. Sometimes they periodically shred the paper in these boxes to save space. And then once these boxes have become full they take them to their local recycling center to be processed. The entire process doesn't take up much time or energy. Anyone could do it!

If you're interested in starting a recycling program of your own, contact your local recycling center today. You'll be glad you did!
