Questions to Ask Landscape Architects

Whether you own residential or commercial property, you want your landscape to look as appealing as possible. Many people choose to hire landscape architects to create plans for their back and front yards. You can use the following questions to help you decide which landscape architects will work well for you.

  • Do you have photos that show what types of design ideas you have developed?
Many people find that photos are easier to understand than technical plans. Instead of trying to envision what the plans look like, you can simply look at the gardens, paved paths, pools, and patios included in the photographs. That way, you can choose a landscape architect with ideas that appeal to you.

  • Do you offer garden design as well as structural design?
If you want a contractor that can help you choose plants for your garden and yard, then you will want someone with experience in this area. In many cases, landscape architects have experience working with plants as well as construction plans.

  • Do you have a construction and landscaping crew, or will I have to hire those contractors separately?
Many landscape architects have crews with experience building paved garden paths, ponds, pools, and pergolas. Others, however, only offer landscaping plans. If you don’t mind hiring a contractor on your own, then you might consider using a design firm that does not offer construction services. Otherwise, look for a full-service company that can install decks, patios, and gardens as well as design them.

If you enjoy both interior design and the outdoors, consider becoming a landscape architect. You can choose to work at either residential or commercial landscaping company. For the last five years, this career has been considered one of the best jobs to have by US News and World Report. While gardens can be traced back to ancient times, landscape architecture is a more modern profession. The position moves beyond the idea of plants and, with the help of contractors, adds structure and pavement to barren yards.

When designing a yard, landscape architects must consider certain variables. These include light, climate, the style of the house, and the client’s wishes. While plants are an important part of a garden, many people do not like the idea of looking after a high maintenance yard. To homeowners, an outdoor entertaining area is desirable. Paved patios and decks create space for seating and barbequing. The construction of a pergola creates a shade in a yard lacking trees. Water is also a popular element because it can be included through the addition of a pool or pond. When planning the design, the style of the building should be taken into consideration, whether it is contemporary or traditional. To achieve this career goal, you must meet both the state and federal requirements. The Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards oversee the licensing of new applicants. The criteria for licensing include education and on-the-job experience as well as passing the mandatory exams. Once you have completed the necessary prerequisites, you can start applying for open positions at landscaping firms and enjoy a career in the sun.
