Questions to Ask About a Church

Many Christians will worship in the same church their entire lives. But some may find themselves having to find another church, either as a result of moving or finding they have more in common with a different denomination of their faith. Whether you are relocating to a new city or state, thinking of joining a church for the first time, or seeking to learn more about what separates Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists and other denominations, here are some questions that may help.

  • What is your denomination, and what are its core beliefs?
While every Christian denomination shares a belief in the Bible and the worship of Jesus Christ, there are numerous doctrinal issues where opinions may be split. These can include anything from positions on current political questions to the ordaining of women as ministers.

  • What is the mission of your church?
While all churches may share a mission of fellowship, faith and helping its members live a life of grace, it is also true that a Methodist, a Presbyterian and a Baptist church leader might offer different answers to this question.

  • When are services held?
Times can vary on Sunday morning services. Some churches may also offer evening services that may be more convenient for some members of the congregation.

  • Besides regular services, what community programs do you offer?
Many churches provide Sunday School classes for children, and Bible study for adults. They may also sponsor community outreach programs to help the less fortunate.

  • Can I receive Communion?
Most churches only require baptism for a person to receive Communion. However, a Catholic church may only allow a Protestant or Lutheran to receive Communion under specifically defined circumstances.

Has your life been impacted by the power of Christ? If so and in a strong way, a mission within the Church may be the place for you to bring light and hope to others. Priests, deacons, bishops, and other earthly workers of God usher the teachings of the Bible on a daily basis to millions of people. Whether they adapt to the Baptist, Methodist or Presbyterian faith, they solve many problems and spread God’s influence worldwide.

Depending on the type of Christianity, churches work with and for their congregations to ultimately improve the quality of the worship service. Methodist groups are less orthodox and embrace “open-air” preaching while encouraging a holy-minded lifestyle. Presbyterian fellowships are more democratic, voting on their officials and the deacons who deliver the sermons. Roman Catholics, who separated from Lutheran beliefs, focus on personal interpretation of the Bible and God’s graceful influence on individuals. A Baptist community concentrates heavily on evangelicalism and salvation based heavily upon faith, also weighing heavily on a lifestyle devoted to God. Those working under their branches of Christianity must yield to higher authorities, such as priests responding to bishops who work in episcopal churches.

Priests must be ordained to their profession, attending a seminary through their local religious order. Only those with the utmost faith and knowledge of the Apostles, Gospel, Pentecost, New Covenant, and so on, will receive their bishop’s blessing, or “call” following a vow of celibacy and obedience. While there are many levels of authority within the church, if you are not prepared to devote your life to God, it will not be suitable for you.

Becoming a priest within the Catholic or other church is a steep and selfless but rewarding journey God bestows upon few in the community.
