Frequently Asked Questions About Caskets
Dead bodies that have been embalmed are placed inside long rectangular caskets for burial in a cemetery plot or placement within a burial vault. Also known as a funerary box or coffin, a casket can also refer to a small decorated chest to hold jewels and other valuables. When shopping around for caskets, check out these frequently asked questions:

What must the seller provide me with prior to sale of the casket?
There are a few things the seller of the casket must provide, such as a written price list of all caskets, alternative containers and outer burial containers for sale. They must also provide a visible tag on the coffin outlining the various parts of the casket by price, metal thickness, wood type and construction type. You should also be given an itemized statement of all costs involved.

Can I buy caskets and coffins online?
Coffins, caskets and urns can be very expensive at funeral homes. You can probably save yourself some cash if you buy online or direct from a specialty casket store. These dealers offer alternatives for customers who would otherwise give in to convenience during their time of grief and purchase a more expensive model from a funeral home.

To save money, can I consider renting a casket instead?
It may surprise you to know that you can opt to rent a coffin instead of buying one. You can significantly lower your funeral costs by renting a casket. Used for display only at the wake, you can choose a beautiful casket, and then use a simple, less expensive casket for the burial.

Planning a funeral is hard for the ones left behind. By becoming a funeral home director, you can help them with the memorial. While some people see this job as disturbing, a funeral director helps ensure that the children and other family members' final goodbye to their loved one ends up beautiful. In this position, you may be responsible for preparing the body, depending on if the family wants to bury the loved one or cremate them. You may also help plan the flower and spray arrangements that will be displayed at the funeral.

The educational requirements for a funeral home director differ from state to state. Most require the completion of a four-year degree in mortuary science. Mandatory courses include anatomy and physiology. The completion of an apprenticeship and licensing exam are also typical requirements. The internship will help give you the experience you need to be successful in your career. You will learn how to embalm and cremate bodies as well as how to advise families on picking a cemetery. Many people do not realize that there are specific graveyards for certain corpses, like pets and veterans.

Working in the showroom will introduce you to the choices of caskets and urns for the ashes. Coffins come in metals, such as steel, and woods like cherry. Families can also order custom caskets or urns if they are unhappy with the selection available. You can also explain the purpose of the vaults placed under the coffins and how to handle the ashes. Your knowledge of the funeral process can help to make arranging these events easier. It is important to keep in mind that families will turn to you not only for advice, but also for sympathy. Become a funeral director and be a source of comfort for the grieving.
