    Working as part of a team, with engineers and construction contractors, architects bring a valuable component to the design process. They offer many services, whether on a commercial or residential level. They may go beyond the scope of new, modern and contemporary construction and take on projects such as historical preservation, industrial and retail projects, or reconstruction after catastrophe.

    Other services offered may include independent testing, quality assurance, forensic investigation, product certification, or building code compliance evaluations. They may generate home code compliance research reports, and offer engineering services such as test protocol interpretation. Still other services include anything from landscape project management and risk assessment to status tracking and solution implementation for the interior and exterior of homes and other structures.

    All architects must be licensed and certified. This means they must have obtained the appropriate degree in architecture, usually resulting from six or more years of college. This is usually followed by internships and hands-on training. Good skills to have in this career include excellent imagination and creativity, an ability to look beyond the traditional and get innovative, and excellent communication skills, as they often work with other teams and clients on a daily basis. They should have a steady hand and a good eye for drawing and drafting. But they should also be good with the computer, too, as they often use state-of-the-art software to assist them in designing contemporary and modern houses and skyscrapers. Specifically, a background in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) is required. They may work for a firm or work for themselves designing floor plans and other features of a house or building, or even the surrounding landscape.
