Questions You Should Ask Architects

There are different types of architects that specialize in various commercial structures and modern houses. While some create blueprint plans for contemporary homes, others are landscape design experts. In order to find and hire the right architecture professional or firm, you should consider making a few important inquiries first. A few of these helpful questions are listed below.

  • How long will it take you to create a blueprint of the house or structure?
Drafting professional blueprints can take some time. The size and detail of the building or house can certainly have an impact on the length of time it requires. You may find it helpful to get a few different time estimates from different architects.

  • What residential homes and commercial buildings have you designed?
Depending on the architect, he or she may have dealt with several houses or commercial structures in the past. You can ask to see drafts or photos of these structures in order to get an idea of what they can offer. You may discover that their contemporary style is not right for you.

  • What rate or cost would apply to the home or building design?
The rates charged by many architecture firms often relate to their experience, success, and location. How desirable their assistance is will also play a part. Get a few different quotes from different architects or firms in the beginning. This way you can find a rate that suits you.

  • Can you assist with landscape design projects?
There are some architects that specialize in modern landscape design. This often involves a property or lot of land that needs aesthetic improvements. Just so you know, not all architects will deal in this area of the business. Therefore it pays to ask up front.

Working as part of a team, with engineers and construction contractors, architects bring a valuable component to the design process. They offer many services, whether on a commercial or residential level. They may go beyond the scope of new, modern and contemporary construction and take on projects such as historical preservation, industrial and retail projects, or reconstruction after catastrophe.

Other services offered may include independent testing, quality assurance, forensic investigation, product certification, or building code compliance evaluations. They may generate home code compliance research reports, and offer engineering services such as test protocol interpretation. Still other services include anything from landscape project management and risk assessment to status tracking and solution implementation for the interior and exterior of homes and other structures.

All architects must be licensed and certified. This means they must have obtained the appropriate degree in architecture, usually resulting from six or more years of college. This is usually followed by internships and hands-on training. Good skills to have in this career include excellent imagination and creativity, an ability to look beyond the traditional and get innovative, and excellent communication skills, as they often work with other teams and clients on a daily basis. They should have a steady hand and a good eye for drawing and drafting. But they should also be good with the computer, too, as they often use state-of-the-art software to assist them in designing contemporary and modern houses and skyscrapers. Specifically, a background in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) is required. They may work for a firm or work for themselves designing floor plans and other features of a house or building, or even the surrounding landscape.
