Important Terms to Know About Nurses Schools
Nurses are a crucial part of the healthcare system, adding the softer touch that doctors often don’t have time to provide. As part of their jobs, they care one-on-one for patients within hospitals, clinics and private practices. They may bathe patients, take their vitals, administer medication and offer a bit of comfort. To become a nurse, you must attend nursing school, taking courses to get certified as an RN or get your license as an LPN. It’s important to do your research when it comes to finding schools that offer degrees in nursing and that offer accredited courses in the subjects you need to take, such as science and biology. Here are some important terms to know when looking at nursing schools:

Licensed Practical Nurse: Called LPN for short, this professional provides basic bedside assistance for those who are sick, injured or disabled, and answers to physicians, practitioners and registered nurses. They may be found in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, private practices, hospitals and clinics.

Registered Nurse: Called RN for short, this professional treats and educates patients, preps for surgery and assists during surgery, and provides emotional support to patients and their families. Other responsibilities include recording medical histories, assisting with diagnostic tests, operating machinery, administering medication and offering much-needed follow-up care. To become an RN, one must have a bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree in nursing, with continued education being a part of the job through ongoing courses and certifications.

Oncology Nurse: A nurse who focuses on care for cancer patients. Students looking to go into this specialty can seek out the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC), which offers many different options for board certification in oncology nursing, to obtain a degree and keep up to date on the latest medical technologies and practices.

Becoming a nurse can be an exciting endeavor. But it takes a lot of hard work and commitment to have a board certify you as an RN or LPN. You can’t get your license to work in a hospital, clinic, medical center, assisted living center, or private practice without first obtaining an education and degree from an accredited nursing school. Nursing schools offer many different programs geared toward various aspects of training to become a nurse, whether one wants to be an RN, LPN, nurse practitioner, or nursing healthcare manager. Either way, nurses care for sick and elderly patients, treat and medicate them, and assist physicians in surgery. To register in a nursing program, you must contact the school you’re interested in attending. The registrar is a good place to start, whether online or in person. Before speaking to an admissions professional, have a set of questions ready.

  • What do I need to do to register for a nursing program at your school?
The admissions office will direct you where to go to fill out the necessary forms, whether in the office, or even online. They can also refer you to the financial aid department as well.

  • What nursing programs do you offer?
Many colleges have a nursing department that offers the necessary nursing classes and courses to take. Other colleges are strictly for nurses, offering a complete course of study just for students who wish to become nurses. Program credits and course rates vary from school to school.

  • Do you offer scholarships?
When in high school, you may be awarded a scholarship to a nursing school if you have filled out the appropriate forms and have the necessary grade point average. Nursing schools typically award many scholarships based on a number of factors, not just grades, such as financial need or community involvement.
