Important Terms to Know about Heat Pumps
The following terms should help you communicate effectively with heat pump dealers and service providers:

Exhaust Air Heat Pump: A pump that extracts heat from a building's exhaust air.

Geothermal Heat Pump: A geothermal heat pump uses water to transmit heat from an underground source to a building. These pumps use water to transfer ground temperature, which is usually more constant than above-ground temperature, to regulate a building's climate. It can also refer to a device that pumps heat into the ground.

Source: Heat pumps move energy in the opposite direction that it would typically flow. The source, therefore, is an area with a lower temperature that the heat pump transfers energy away from.

Heat Sink: Also called the sink, this is the higher temperature area at the opposite end of the heat pump.

Compressor: A device that squeezes molecules together to increase pressure and raise temperature.

Refrigerant: A substance that circulates through the pump to transfer heat. It can be air, water, or other liquids and gases.

Reversing Valve: Controls the direction in which heat flows through the pump. Reversing valves in HVAC systems, therefore, can control whether the heat pump cools or heats a building.

Condenser: A coil that allows the refrigerant to transfer heat to the air.

Balance Point: When the heat pumped into a building matches the heat lost by the building. When this happens, the heat pump has met the building's heating needs. If a heat pump cannot reach the balance point, then supplemental heating devices are needed to maintain a steady temperature.

A heat pump is a mechanical or electric device that moves heat from one location to another, usually for cooling purposes. These units are generally installed by a special technician who is trained to work with various types of cooling systems. Most also work with other home and office building equipment, such as industrial refrigerators and residential air conditioning units that require heat pumps to function. Some are electricians and others are repair men. If you need maintenance or need to install a new pump, it is prudent to hire a professional.

Although a technician does not require a license to install heat pumps, many have training or experience that has taught them how various types of pumps work. There are cheap discounted pumps, green pumps that save energy, as well as electric or gas pumps. It just depends on what type of cooling system requires it and what its purpose is. There are also reverse heat pumps that work with furnaces to provide thermal comfort and temperature control in the winter.

Related to heat pump manufacturers are the companies that use them within their own products. For example, if you own a refrigerating business or distribute central air conditioning units, you may be able to buy heat pumps at wholesale discounted prices. If you are a private consumer who is buying a heat pump to be installed in your home or office, consider getting the help of a technician. Many will be able to check out the type of system you have and recommend what new pump will fit in well.
