Social Service & Welfare Organizations

Nowadays there are a number of social service and welfare organizations that assist people every day. Plenty of individuals volunteer and work at these community facilities. Although they are typically nonprofit organizations, the government often runs these shelters, clinics, and schools, which means you can make a modest living working at them. This can certainly be a very rewarding field to get into, and you do get the chance to help a lot of people regularly. Some of the different types of organizations you may consider are family shelters, animal humane society locations, child foster care facilities, and public shelters for physically abused women.

There is typically not a specific college degree needed to work in this field. However, you may need to acquire some initial training that helps you assist adults and children with different types of problems. While some people you encounter may be in need of welfare money, others may need counseling from being sexually abused. If you provide any type of counseling to people, there may be a certain degree requirement, such as an education in psychology. Just so you know, some of the people you work with may have a disability, while others may be the victims of domestic violence. It is always important to provide people with shelter in order to prevent further abuse. If you apply at an animal shelter or community humane society location, you will need to help care for pets, and assist them with getting adopted.

When you work for or volunteer at a welfare agency or nonprofit social service organization, you can certainly plan on dealing with a lot of women, men and children daily.

"The ladies working in this agency takes the time to help everyone that walks through their door. The spend their time ensuring that students suspended from school has another alternative to hanging out on the streets. They provide a safe haven for the kids. Ironically, these ladies do not get paid for their services, but you could not tell from the commitment and hard work that they constantly ..."

Winding your way through government departments like welfare and worker rights can be difficult if you do not have previous experience with them. Social service and welfare organizations can often give you the assistance that you need. You should be able to find several non-profit associations in your area, so use these guidelines to help you decide which ones are right for you. First, ask the agency how long they have been in business. A social services and welfare organization with several years of experience should be able to provide the best services. Ask the agency what types of services they offer. Some common services include worker's rights, income assistance, abuse and domestic violence counseling, foster care and adoption supervision, family and group therapy, employee assistance, disability rights, job training, substance abuse reform, child system applications for custody, and anti-poverty assistance. Ask the organization if they have social workers that have earned degrees that will help them give you the counseling that you need in specific areas. Some of the social workers have been trained to provide psychological treatment while others are trained to help workers and welfare recipients get the job and financial assistance they deserve. Ask the agency if they have a department that addresses your specific needs. Most of the social service and welfare organizations that you contact will be non-profits. Depending on your income, though, you might need to pay for some of the services that you receive so be sure to ask them about any charges before you use them.
