Helpful Questions to Ask Social & Human Services

Many people turn to social and human services in their community for assistance. These federal and state-regulated organizations can often help you with welfare payments, family counseling, and even finding employment. However, it is important to know which social services department should be addressed, and what information you need in order to acquire the proper assistance. Consider asking these questions listed below.

  • Are you a non-profit organization?
Whether or not the department or agency is non-profit may affect any charges or fees they demand. Typically federal or state-regulated social service departments are available to the public or community free of charge. However, some public service organizations may not be non-profit.

  • Can you help me find employment within a specific field?
If you refer to the unemployment office, this human services department can often help you find a job. However, depending on your location, the type of available work may vary. Therefore it is wise to inquire about a specific job field you have in mind, but be aware that relocating may be necessary.

  • Do you offer free family counseling services?
It is common for social services to provide family counseling assistance to those in need. This is offered to help with issues like drug abuse, depression, and child or spousal abuse. However, it is wise to ask about this type of counseling assistance, because it may only be offered at specific times.

  • Do you provide shelters for abused women and children?
With so many abused women and children across the country, social services typically provides shelter in most towns and cities. Just be sure to ask where the shelter is located and what is provided for the women and children. Some small towns may not offer this type of human service, but it is likely that a nearby city will.

Social and human service organizations often employ social workers from a variety of backgrounds to help ensure that they can provide effective assistance to children and adults who need mental health counseling, rent assistance, adoption aid, and other types of help.

Social workers can specialize in many different fields, but they all learn important information and techniques to assist their clients in the ways that they need.

Some of the employees at a social and human service agency will have backgrounds in mental health counseling. Some of them even specialize in specific areas of counseling, so they can help children, adults, and other family members that need their help.

Many of the social workers also learn about a variety of non-profit organizations that exist in the community. This allows them to send clients to other agencies that might be able to assist them better. For instance, one of the agents might send a person who just lost his job to a non-profit that specializes in helping workers find employment. The human service organizations know that they cannot help everyone, so they form alliances in the community to help those who need welfare, adoption, rent, and employee compensation assistance.

These organizations also need managers that can oversee their operations. Many of the managers earn degrees from programs that prepare them to run non-profit agencies. They spend their time working with agents, other family and children agencies, and funding options that provide money to increase their presence in the community and provide assistance to a wider range of people.
