Social Workers

Becoming a social worker takes hard work and dedication. It can be a rewarding career, but not one without its fair share of commitment. Most positions require at least a bachelor's degree. It is also helpful to know a second language to communicate with even more people on the job. Students must complete four years of college, taking courses like criminal justice, sociology, human rights, growth and development, and psychology. They can later go on to obtain their master's degree in social work, but they must be certified and licensed before practicing social work in any capacity, such as within hospitals, schools, government offices, health and welfare offices, and hospice organizations.

In their studies, social workers learn how people interact as a family group and as individuals in society, taking into account various issues such as mental health and substance abuse problems. Many clinical social workers focus on the youth of today's society, as children are often the ones who suffer, both at home and in school. They may offer services pertaining to the welfare system, ethics, family and child issues, schools, and medical care.

Many counselors belong to a national association, dedicated to keeping professionals in this line of work informed. They can also keep up with their clinical certification and licensing through such associations. Many social worker offices and agencies have a 24-hour answering services for emergencies, and some even offer free initial counseling consultations. That being said, most social work services are free for residents of a particular city or state, through public governmental assistance, child protective services agencies, or as part of school offerings.

National Association of Social Workers
Social workers provide invaluable services to people throughout the nation. If you are a professional social worker, make sure you apply for membership to our prestigious association today!

Social workers should be certified and licensed, so be sure to check out each background carefully. When wondering how to choose the right counselor, be sure to look into the certified professional's background first. Call the office of each counselor, professional or licensed social worker you are considering to find out whether the counselor and his or her staff are pleasant, helpful and courteous. Find out all contact information for the counselor, get his or her hours, and consider whether the counselor is reachable at any time. Keep in mind that such professionals provide counseling, support, advice, evaluations, and case management. A clinical social worker, trained in psychotherapy, has a background in sociology, growth and development, advocacy, mental health theory, human behavior, medical issues, and psychology. Social workers are trained in the human condition, societies, communities, human science, children and family relationships, development, movement and settlement, and clinical and medical issues. They also study people and how they interact as a group in a society and as individuals. Inquire how long the social worker has been in business, whether as part of a clinic, school, government office or private practice. Ask how long appointments last and what the rate is. You want to choose a counselor who is easily available, will make time for you when you need it, and is comforting to speak with. Ask if the social worker makes house calls, as many do. Take a drive by the counselor's office. Is it well maintained and inviting? Appearance can tell you a lot about the professionalism of the counselor. Check out licensed social workers on the Internet to see what resources are available in your community. Ask your friends and family for recommendations on the local counselors they trust, or ask your doctor for references.
