Questions to Ask Structural Engineers

Before hiring a structural engineer for a full-time position or a contracted construction project, you will need to make sure that you can identify which applicants have the right level of experience, knowledge and education to properly complete the job. The questions below should help you determine which engineers have the skills that you need to successfully complete your civil or industrial construction project.

  • What types of structures have you designed?
If you need an engineer to work on a civil project (such as constructing roads, tunnels, bridges, and dams), then you need to find someone with experience in these areas. It takes a lot of planning and calculations to determine whether a column, beam, or arch can offer the structural support needed for long-term safety, so you want to be sure that your engineer knows how to consider a variety of factors.

  • Do you have experience working with other types of engineers?
Many construction projects involve electrical, mechanical, and industrial systems as well as sturdy bases and tunnels. You should, therefore, look for a structural engineer that has a basic understanding of these systems and knows how to work with electrical and mechanical experts to meet a project’s goals.

  • Do you have references that I can contact?
An engineer that has helped design several structures should have references that include a variety of contractors and firms. Contact these references to learn about the applicant’s character, work ethic, and reliability. That way, you can hire someone that you can rely on to get the job done right.

"I spoke directly to the engineer when I called the office, and they came to my house within a few days. Mr. McConaughy was friendly, thorough and very knowledgeable. He explained my structural issue in terms that I could understand, and followed up with a clear and to-the-point professional letter that was issued the next day. If you have a structural issue in your home, call McCon Engineering. ..."

While structural and civil engineers are perhaps most well known for their major building and bridge projects, this is far from the extent of their work. In the most exact terms, such engineering firms deal with any structure or object that will bear weight, so their skills are equally useful when constructing a dam or consulting for the construction of a vehicle. One of the main tools for an engineer designing a structure, is steel, whether it is used in the building of columns or beams or in the creation of a car's body. In addition, they work with masons to design load-bearing building or tunnel arches made with stone, brick and other durable materials.

In order to become a licensed engineer, there are a number of criteria that candidates must fulfill. A bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, structural or industrial engineering is required from an accredited school. Many professional engineers will pursue graduate degrees as well. In addition to the educational requirements, further specialization through work experience with an established company is also required for a license to work for a firm. This work experience will be in either mechanical, electrical, industrial or civil engineering.

Engineers are not the only professionals responsible for the design and stability of a structure. They work with architects in the planning stages of any building project, and will often visit the site with contractors throughout the building process. Engineers who are employed by federal or local governments will consult with crews on the construction of new roads and bridges.

Structural engineers help create and design the buildings, bridges and roads upon which people depend on using each day. Their training in math, science and physics enables them to build structures that will last.
