Tailors are, without a doubt, the most important part of the men's tailoring industry. Some professionals that they work closely with and also contribute to the overall success of this industry are dry cleaning companies and fabric shops.

Tailors are professionals that hone their skills over a number of years. They not only sew, hem and alter clothing, but often will design the entire pattern of the suit from scratch. In order to do this, they need a strong background in both fashion and design. Many tailors attend college and graduate with a degree. Through these classes, tailors learn how to adjust their seams to fit the type of fabric they are working with, alter a suit jacket, and even custom design a new shirt for their clients. Not all tailors gain their skills through formal training. Many work as an apprentice to another clothier or designer, or are self taught. By working with another professional, they can learn the ins and outs of bespoke tailoring, cutting a pattern, taking proper measurements, and hemming a pair of pants or shorts to fit well. All of these experiences add up to skilled professionals that produce excellent men's wear.

In this industry, we also have dry cleaners. Many dry cleaning businesses hire tailors full time to do alterations and adjustments for their clientele. They like to be able to offer this service, in addition to cleaning and pressing suits. Some may even offer steam ironing, depending on the fabric the suit is made from.

Finally, we have fabric shops. Here, a tailor can hunt for fabric to create custom clothing with. From helping the tailor by measuring out the right amount of cloth and even placing special orders, fabric shops are extremely useful.

"should give pricing, rather than waste people's time. Why do you need to see the pants that need hemming? If that is not an option, give a price range. ..."

In your search for the best tailor in your area, get hours, location, background, rates and contact information. Ask if the tailor or seamstress has a website you can check out for more information, photos, and descriptions of services. Some larger sites offer virtual tours, free quotes, and customer testimonials. Before choosing a tailor, make appointments to meet with a few different professionals, patternmakers, clothiers, designers and seamstresses. Is the tailor professional and timely? Is he or she willing to help and accommodate your requests? Check out the physical appearance of the facility, ensuring it is clean and well maintained. Take note if staff members are courteous and friendly. Ask if the company is part of a national chain, or locally owned and operated. Many tailors work out of their homes or small store fronts. Find out the company background and research its reputation in the business. Make sure the tailor offers the services you want, whether you need custom men's suits, jackets, or shirts. Other services may include adjusting hems or waistbands of uniforms, pants, shirts, and jackets, as well as adjustments to embroidery or other design elements. Keep in mind that tailors typically hem, sew, shorten, measure, or adjust pants and other articles of clothing to ensure a precise fit. Many tailors also offer to iron, press, or dry clean the finished product, which can include suits for men, jackets, shirts or custom clothing. Find out about rates and what the rates entail, such as measuring and hemming. Inquire whether the bespoke tailor can handle your request and get a timeline for completion in advance. Before choosing a tailor, keep in mind the professional's hours, availability, location, friendliness of staff, services, and reputation.
