Professionals who work in or for a retirement community or home include nurses, aides, doctors, physical therapists, and support staff. They all work together to coordinate anything from medication and social activity to meals and recreation. Because retirement communities typically feature common areas for meals, amenities, and socialization, such as clubhouses, pools, golf courses, and gardens, it's important for these homes to be well organized.

Retirement home directors are professionals who ensure day-to-day operations go smoothly and that everyone is happy. They must coordinate activities, maintenance schedules of the community grounds, meals, and elderly care. Chefs and cooks are another set of professionals. They provide the daily food for residents and must ensure it is healthy for all.

While some retirement homes and communities cater to the active senior citizen, others are geared more toward hospice services or nursing home care for elderly adults, or those with Alzheimer's or another disability. These usually offer an on-site medical facility to tend to patients in need, as many of the residents are in need of constant medical supervision, care, or treatment. In your tours of various retirement community facilities and nursing homes, make a checklist of each facility's good points and bad points, affordable rates and prices, health care insurance and government-assisted coverage, professional background, eligibility, activity programs, medical treatment, recreation areas, amenities, elderly hospice services, health and wellness programs, disability assistance, classes, meals, medication, transportation, and atmosphere. Also, take a close look at other senior and adult residents or day patients. Do they appear happy and well cared for? Are the staff members genuinely friendly, caring, skilled, professional care givers and nurses? Do they have the necessary expertise and qualifications? Once you answer these questions, you'll be better able to narrow down your choice for a proper nursing home or retirement community.
