Monuments are not only large memorial structures or historical markers. Monuments may take the shape of bronze urns or even small plaques in a cemetery or etched into a head stone. Many graves and tomb stones also carry inscriptions that commemorate the person who was laid there. Custom insignias and signs may be placed before tombs, to honor the man or woman buried there. Many monuments are remembered for their age, size or historical significance to a society. Monuments may be iconic landmarks, religious sites or a famous design made to symbolize, equality, freedom and the like. Having any number of questions lined up may help an individual glimpse a better understanding of the purpose and reason for having monuments.

  • What is the purpose of erecting a monument?
These monumental structures are raised to improve the appearance of a city or locale. Often, plaques are placed at the foot of the monument to describe the reason for that particular effigy.

  • Are all monuments monoliths?
No, monuments can be as miniscule as a memorial marker on a park bench or even a head stone for a grave. What is important is the fact that the monument is there in remembrance of the society that once stood or the man or woman who had lived.

  • What do monuments represent?
The social meaning of these structures can vary significantly depending on the outlook of different social groups. Some see monuments as figures of protection or religious intent, while others may see it symbolic of oppression, the ideals of a culture or a false idol.
