Tips for Tanning
Indoor tanning can provide you with an even, bronze and glowing beach tan in all seasons. Salons and spas offer both tanning beds and spray tan options. Spray tans, which can be applied in a booth or airbrushed, are an excellent choice for those that have skin that burns easily. If you are new to sunless tanning, then it is important to remember a few tips that can help you achieve a safe and beautiful tan:

Tip #1: Check which prescription medications hinder tanning.
There are certain antibiotics and blood pressure medications that can prevent tanning and facilitate sunburn. Tanning salons feature charts of photosensitizing medications and the effects those medications have on tanning.

Tip #2: Make sure you use indoor tanning lotion in advance.
Indoor tanning lotions stimulate the production of melanin and encourage the absorption of UV rays. Applying the lotion 1-2 hours in advance allows the skin to absorb the lotion fully, which will shorten the amount of time you need to spend in the tanning bed.

Tip #3: Don't overestimate the amount of time you need to spend in the tanning bed.
Skin continues to tan even after exposure to UV rays. Skin tingling or prickling is an indication that you have had enough. If you have fair and/or sensitive skin, spending 5-7 minutes in the level 1 tanning bed should be fine the first time.

Tip #4: When spray tanning, exfoliate skin before your session.
Removing dead skin cells before your session gives you more even results and extends the life of your tan. You will also want to shave beforehand, because doing so afterwards might remove layers of your tan.

Tip #5: Allow the spray tan to set.
Showering before your spray tan has had a chance to adhere will result in streaking and blotching. Wait at least 6 hours before exercising or bathing.

Tip #6: Wear loose fitting clothing after you spray tan.
After your spray tan, wearing clothing that rubs against the skin can cause the bronzing element to rub off.

By tanning at a salon, you can bronze your skin without spending hours in the sun. Visiting a spa also gives you a beach experience of lying in the warmth of UV rays from the sun. You can imagine soaking in the delightful coconut scent of suntan lotion in less than half an hour. When shopping for a salon, keep these questions in mind.

  • What are your prices and package deals?
Inquire about packages since tanning usually requires repeat visits. If you have to use the package within a specific period of time, make sure that it fits in realistically with your schedule.

  • Do you recommend tanning schedules?
It’s important to get the right tan, not a tan that looks fake. A professional spa should give you a detailed schedule that allows you to slowly tan.

  • What kind of booths do you have?
Keep your options versatile by choosing a salon with a variety of tanning machines. You should typically be able to choose between a low-pressure and high-pressure bed. Or forgo a bed altogether, and opt for a standing booth (which is called a “tanning vertical” in European salons).

  • Do you offer an airbrush service?
While you can always apply self sunless spray at home, an airbrush service provides convenience and professionalism. This option will give you the dark skin tone you want without UV exposure. Spray tans last about a week.

  • Can you help me pick out the right beauty products?
Tinglers, bronzers, jojoba-infused moisturizers are just a few ways to go when picking an indoor tanning lotion. You want to find a professionals who really understand how these products work. Test the associate’s knowledge by describing your skin and tanning goals, and make sure to ask whether they offer sample sizes.
