Questions to Ask Hospice Services

Hospice health care provides professional, friendly and needed support for people suffering from an illness or disease. Hospice is available in home as well as in hospitals and other medical facilities. If someone you love is suffering from a disease such as cancer or another terminal illness, consider hiring hospice assistance. Here are some questions to ask hospice health care providers.

  • When should I decide to place someone I love in hospice care?
Hospices are one of several services available for people suffering from a sickness which limits their life and functions. Patient consent is mandatory and in many cases their doctor refers them to a hospice provider after explaining their options to them. In the case where a disease is terminal a hospice provider will be able to administer palliative care as well which can be a convincing factor for some people. Palliative care is a treatment that reduces pain caused by a sickness such as cancer or any other disease.

  • If I choose hospice care at home what special equipment will I need?
Hospice providers typically will complete a house assessment to determine if anything is needed to administer care, however in most cases they bring the equipment necessary. As a long-term condition progresses or gets worse additional supplies like shower supports or moving the patient’s bedroom to the first level of a house may be necessary.

  • I am currently caring for a family member with a terminal or debilitating illness but could use a break, is there temporary hospice available?
Temporary hospice care is known as respite care. Respite can be used for volunteer caregivers and in other situations. Ask your medical insurance provider if they cover respite care to understand the costs up front.

Medical facilities that offer hospice services need to make sure that they have health care professionals and volunteers who can provide patients with the types of palliative care that they need. This usually means that the hospitals maintain a staff that includes nurses, social workers, and volunteers.

Nurses working for a medical center that provides hospice services need training that helps them treat terminally ill patients who have sicknesses such as incurable cancer. Many of these patients only have a short amount of life left, but others might need long term treatment to make the final years of their lives as enjoyable and pain-free as possible. Nurses should understand the types of palliative options that hospice programs offer. They might need training in emergency health care, pain management, and psychology. Some nurses visit patients' homes as well, so they need to know how to use clinical instruments, drugs, and procedures in the home environment as well as a hospital.

Social workers within the hospice medical system often work closely with patients and their families to help them understand sickness, come to terms with death, and make choices that will improve the final weeks or months of a loved one's life. The social worker might also help the family file insurance claims, allowing them to get the rest that they need during trying times.

Volunteers play an important role in hospice services. Volunteers might spend time with sick patients, drive patients to their treatments, or run errands for those who no longer have the strength to leave their homes.
