What to Ask When Buying Used Furniture

Buying used furniture from an outlet or secondhand store can be a bit of a gamble. Sometimes the furnishings from these shops are top notch, and sometimes they're hiding secrets. Many furniture novices are intimidated by knowledgeable shopkeepers and dealers who seem unapproachable. But a little poking and prodding can usually turn up the facts about any piece of furniture. Here are a few questions consumers should ask before bringing a piece of used furniture home.

  • Where does your inventory come from?
Reputable furniture dealers should have no problem sharing the provenance, or origin, of their merchandise. Knowing where an item comes from is especially important for consumers who are concerned about bringing mold, bed bugs and other health hazards into their home or office.

  • Has this piece been independently appraised?
Consignment and antique shops are free to put any price they want on an item. But it never hurts to ask how they got to that price. If their price is not what it should be, let them know. This issue is especially important when purchasing vintage furnishings.

  • What is the return policy?
Can you bring the piece back to the outlet if it's missing pieces? Will the shop owner come pick up a refurbished bed if it happens to be infested with bed bugs? Pieces of furniture are big and difficult to move so be clear on how a returned item will get back before making the purchase.

  • Will you accept a lower offer?
Furniture salesmen, especially secondhand dealers, are notorious hagglers. If you're not happy with their original price, make an offer. The worst that can happen is that they say, "No." Many salespeople aren't authorized to make this type of decision, so you may have to speak to an office manager.
  • Furniture Bank Association of North America
The NFBA is the non-profit association of furniture banks across the nation. We make sure furniture is donated and repurposed for families in need in every area of the country.

Two basic kinds of services can be accessed from professional used furniture dealers or stores. Customers might contact secondhand outlets, for instance, in order to outfit their homes or offices. Alternately, furniture dealers can allow people to offer their used furniture for sale to others on a consignment basis.

Whether people are looking to either purchase secondhand furniture or offer some for sale, they should first make sure that the particular dealer can handle the item in question. The commercial realities of running such a business could dictate that professionals in this industry specifically address themselves to selling, for instance, vintage furniture. Secondhand dealers offering antique pieces for resale might want to refurbish them. In order to avoid the necessity of renovation, dealers could choose to offer contemporary items.

In addition to the distinction between modern and antique furniture, dealers can also specialize in particular categories either of goods or clientele. Customers could, for instance, go to particular outlets to find dining room tables. The same establishments could similarly allow visitors to pick up leather chairs for their living rooms. Commercial clients, on the other hand, will have their own furnishing needs, oriented toward offices and cubicles. Customers could accordingly shop for appropriate desks on which computers or other items could be placed.

In general, this industry allows shoppers to access items at store discounts and cheaper prices than would be originally offered by manufacturers. Furniture dealers may thus wish to have a thorough knowledge of their field. Alternately, furniture dealers should at least possess an adequate understanding of their clientele's concerns and wishes.
