Retirement Community and Assisted Living FAQ
Retirement communities are sometimes attractive options for people of a certain age who want to be removed from the stresses of working life, and who want to live amongst their peers. If you are confused about the differences between retirement communities and nursing homes, then the following answers to some common questions might be useful to you:

What is a retirement community?
A retirement community is a series of apartments, homes or housing complexes that provide housing, meals and housekeeping to residents, as well as recreational and social activities. These communities or villages are marketed to retired persons who want to withdraw from working life, but who are essentially able to take care of themselves. These communities are age restricted, and are typically found in warm climates such as Florida, Arizona and California. Retirement communities do not usually offer home care assistance.

What is an assisted living facility?
An assisted living facility is a housing system for people who are unable to care for themselves. While there are assisted living facilities for people of all ages, the most common types of assisted living facilities are geared toward the elderly with degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. These facilities provide around-the-clock care including administration of medication, dressing, bathing and feeding. Assisted living centers might have qualified doctors and nurses on staff, but they are not legally required to do so unless they are specifically licensed to treat medical conditions.

How are retirement communities and assisted living facilities regulated?
Retirement communities are not regulated organizations, since they do not provide medical care or assistance. Assisted living facilities and nursing homes, however, must be licensed by the state and the Department of Social Services.

We offer a great alternative for seniors who may need additional assistance but not the intensive services of a skilled nursing facility. We only employ the very best certified nursing assistance.

There are many things to think about when you are choosing an institutional rest home for the aged. You need to make sure that the nursing facility has a staff trained to offer seniors the right kinds of elderly care. You need to make sure they have access to all of the medications that your loved one needs to stay healthy and treat health problems like alzheimers and dementia. And you need to make sure that the facility gives your loved one access to a comfortable residential area with assisted living services and a community of other aged adults that he or she will enjoy interacting with. You will also need to make sure that the retirement home is affordable for you or the senior citizen. To get the answers that you need, you will have to contact the institutional rest homes so you can talk to their administration department about your concerns. Ask them if you can visit the facility to make sure the retirement home is comfortable, clean, and welcoming for your loved one. While you are there, you can ask them any questions that you have about the elderly care they provide. Find out how many nurses they have on staff, what types of medical equipment they are trained to use, and what personal freedom they are given to their lives. While it might be a difficult topic to discuss, you should also ask them about long-term hospice services to make your loved one as comfortable as possible when they have terminal illnesses.
