Questions to Ask a Brake Service & Repair Specialist

Nothing is more important on your car than its brakes. Before you allow anyone to touch your vehicle, consider asking a few of these questions. Even if you are doing routine service, being informed is always important.

  • Do you provide brake maintenance services in a package?
    If your state does inspections, the mechanic will often check your brake system. Worn pads will need to be replaced and calipers may need to be repaired. Ask your shop how much they charge for checking the brake system.

  • Is the sound coming from my brakes normal?
    If you have noticed a sound while you are driving your car, ask your specialist if it is normal. It may simply be part of the car, or even coming from the transmission. In more dangerous circumstances something may need to be repaired or changed.

  • Are brake fluid changes included?
    Find out if your shop changes brake fluid. They may do this when they change other fluids such as in the radiator or transmission.

  • Is an inspection cost included in the repair?
    Auto shops typically charge for giving an estimate on your brake systems. Should a pad need to be replaced, find out if the estimate charge is put toward the repair. Otherwise, you might find that your truck or car is costing you a lot more than you thought.

  • What is the legal limit for pad thickness?
    If you are concerned that your auto shop is trying to fix something that doesn't need it, find out exactly what they are doing. For example, they may think that a pad needs to be replaced when it may get more mileage out of it.
