Nurses

Nurses, whether in a medical clinic, hospital, private practice, or nursing home, are often the first line of defense, so to speak. They book appointments, check patients in, and take care of them before and after surgery, not to mention assist doctors. Nurses provide many services, no matter which setting they're in, from operating rooms to emergency rooms to pediatric offices.

These care givers must have special talents. Of course, they must know the technical aspects of nursing, taking courses in biology, science, math, and nursing specialties. Also, they must have a gentle demeanor and a willingness to help people. They should also be proficient in time management and communication skills. Interpersonal skills are key here, as nurses and nurse practitioners should be able to easily interact with physicians and patients alike.

With the largest healthcare occupation in the country today being registered nursing, these professionals are in demand. To become a licensed and registered nurse (RN), one must have a basic education under his or her belt, plus a two-or four-year college degree. Students can choose to obtain their master's degree in nursing (MSN) as well. Courses to focus on include chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology. Psychology is another area to focus on, if you plan on working in a psychiatric care center or nursing home after completing your program.

Working with the sick, disabled, children, elderly, and those in their retirement years takes a special skill, one that cannot be learned in school. Care givers such as licensed nurse practitioners can decide to work in a large medical center or clinic, or they can choose to work in a small private medical practice. Services may differ between jobs, but the basics are the same, such as assisting doctors, administering medicine, and performing office duties.

Nurses, or doctor's assistants, can be very helpful for everyday health care advice. They have had to go to nursing school which is very demanding. They are then given a professional nursing degree which allows them to work in clinics and hospitals. Nurses will provide different services depending on the area they are more interested in. They can choose to work with infants or children, or with the elderly in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Those that are in retirement and at well enough to live on their own for the most part may hire a private nurse to come to their home and perform tasks or check their health from time to time. If they are sick, their private nurse can recommend them to a facility where they can be watched more closely. RNs will supply patients with information they may have when unable to speak with their doctor. Nursing centers in hospitals are there for family members to find information on their loved one and ask any questions they may have about the care their relative or friend is receiving. Medical practitioners are often only in hospitals for a couple of hours a day, which leaves the nurses to speak with family members of those that are sick and in their care. Medical practitioners in general health clinics will hire nurses for their practice to assist them in checking the patient's weight, height, and giving any shots that are required. You can ask friends and family about the nurses they talked to when they had to visit the hospital and if they would recommend that facility for you or your loved one. Retired patients in nursing homes or assisted living facilities should ask about the credentials of the nurses on staff to get an idea on their experience and dedication. Doctor assistants will be well educated and can answer many questions you may have. Your physician may be able to recommend an RN that visits patients in their home to treat them for minor ailments.
