Questions to Ask before Selecting a Home Health Care Agency

A home health care agency can be an essential tool in the rehabilitation of a patient after illness, injury or surgery. This team of health care professionals helps an individual recover from the comfort of home and become independent once again. If you are in the market for a home health care agency, we have a few questions to ask prospective companies.

  • What sort of services do you offer?
There are many services that might be provided by a home health care agency from medical care provided by a nurse to physical therapy, housekeeping and companionship for seniors. It is important to choose a company that offers the specific types of medical services you are looking for.

  • What insurance do you accept?
Home health care can quickly become an expensive prospect, whether you are looking at hospice care for a terminally ill family member or physical and occupational therapy for healing after surgery. Finding an agency that accepts your insurance is paramount to ensuring the care you receive at home is affordable.

  • Are employees trained, licensed and certified?
Because these nurses, aides and therapists will be coming right into your home, it is important to ensure they are properly screened and qualified for patient care. Most states require a home care agency to be licensed, and many are certified by Medicare as well. Employees should also be licensed and certified, according to the type of work they do.

  • Is your health care company accredited by any governing agency?
Find out if the home health care agency is accredited by a governing agency like The Joint Commission. Whether you are searching for a companion for a senior, a physical therapist for a child or a nurse for hospice care, the right credentials can make a difference in the quality of care you receive.
  • National Association for Home Care & Hospice
If you're looking for home health services for yourself or your loved one, find them through our association. Providing the largest directory of home care services across the nation.

A home health services agency hires workers trained to provide in-home medical services. Many of these workers are nurses, often with prior experience in hospitals. The work requires flexibility and the ability to deal with all kinds of situations. In some cases, a patient may be worked with for several years. In others, it may be occasional short periods to allow family caregivers to take vacations or a few months of rehabilitation and recovery. These nurses need to be able to make independent clinical decisions in an emergency.

For patients with simpler needs, home health aides or attendants may be employed. These individuals are trained to give CPR, assist with medications and help with daily living tasks. However, they are not medical professionals.

Most clients have some form of physical or mental disability. Seniors often seek to remain in their own homes rather than move to retirement housing. One of the challenges faced by workers for a health care agency is advising on the difficult decision of when such a move might be necessary. Seniors may also hire companions, who provide assistance in daily living and offer the elderly individual mental stimulation and company. Companions are sometimes volunteers, and may also perform tasks such as grocery shopping or driving a client to a dance or to the movies.

Home health care services may be associated with a retirement center. In some cases, they may provide medical care close to the same level as a hospice. Thus, workers may be involved in end of life decisions. As there may be long term relationships involved, this can be difficult for many providers. They need to have annual physicals and take precautions to avoid transmitting disease. Although the vast majority provide services to adults, they may also work with disabled children and their parents.
