Questions to Ask Your Electric Contractor

Choosing an electric contractor for a new construction, remodeling, or home repair isn't a decision that should be rushed. Rates are one important consideration, but skill is equally important. There are questions you should ask a professional before hiring him or her for the job.

  • Are you licensed in this state?
State licensing is required of anyone working with power and wiring both inside and outside a home or business. Ask to see a license before hiring a worker to do your repair or installation project.

  • Can you provide a list of remodeling or new constructions you've handled?
A quality expert will provide references. Ask to see prior work and talk to past clients to make sure they were happy with the quality of work and clean-up following the job.

  • Do you handle both indoor and exterior wiring projects?
For indoor projects in your house or business, most specialists are easy to find. Those who specialize in exterior projects will upgrade older fixtures by installing ground-fault interrupter circuits to all outdoor lighting and items near water like pool filters, emergency generators and pond pumps. Not every specialist is willing to work outside so ask first.

  • What's the best panel for my residential or commercial building?
Breakers protect people from shocks and fires because they fit the circuits that shut off if there is a problem or if you need to replace or maintain an appliance. Main breaker panels are generally best because they offer a main breaker switch as well as the breakers for each circuit. They must be placed within 10 feet of a meter and connect to the cable that comes from the pole into the house or business. An independent electric contractor will tell you the best unit and placement for your house or business.

If you are good at installing wiring, consider becoming an electric contractor. An electric contractor can work on residential or commercial properties. You would work alongside the general contractor on home construction sites.

On a typical day, you might install an electrical panel or perform repairs. You could work to help upgrade the wiring in an old home, or work on a new building. You might repair a client’s indoor or outdoor lighting. You could even put in an emergency generator and exterior lights.

At times, you could be working at a construction site getting wiring in a new home. You might also respond to call that a client is having problems getting power, or has an electrical emergency.

You will need to get a license to become a contractor. To do so, you need to go to a technical school or university where you will learn to install electrical panels and maintain them. Some of the skills you might need include math, science and engineering. You will then have to decide if you want to work independently or connect with a company.

Whether you are working on a private house or a large office complex, you should always be aware of your clients’ safety. There are many laws in place that protect both your clients and your company in emergency situations.

Becoming an electrical contractor is a career you can take pride in. You will have the opportunity to help others while doing a job you love and can be proud of.
