Cariologist Terminology
Visiting the cardiologist can be overwhelming, but especially so if you are not familiar with the terms being used by your doctor. Before your next visit, consider the following terms and definitions so that you can better understand and converse with your specialist:

Cardiovascular: Cardiovascular is the adjective used to describe the system whose job it is to maintain adequate blood circulation. This includes the heart and blood vessels.

Arrhythmia: This term is used to describe nearly any type of irregular electric activity in the heart. An arrhythmia can mean the heart is beating too fast, too slow, or ineffectively. They range from harmless to fatal.

Angioplasty: An angioplasty is a procedure used to widen a narrowed or blocked artery. A wire, to which a small balloon is attached, is passed into the vessel. Using water pressure, the balloon is inflated to open up the artery. If needed this procedure is used in conjunction with inserting a stent to keep the vessel open.

Congenital: This term differs from "hereditary." It is used to describe a disease or condition that was present within an individual at birth. Often these can be detected in utero.

Hypoxia: Hypoxia refers to when the body, or a region of the body, has low levels of oxygen for a sustained period of time. It is often a result of a cardiovascular issue.

Myocardial Infarction: This is the medical term for a "heart attack." Myocardial infarctions occur when there is an interruption in blood supply to some area of the heart. This interruption causes cells within the heart to die.

Many women and men work in the medical field of cardiology. This branch of health care can be both interesting and rewarding for the right individuals. While some professionals in this field are cardiac doctors, others are heart surgeons and pediatric nurses. As a specialist in this branch of medicine, you will need to know your way around cardiovascular diseases, artery valve treatments, blocked blood vessels, and coronary artery disease symptoms. While this can be a very stressful line of work to get involved with, it can also be financially rewarding.

There is always some specialty schooling and training involved with the medical field. This is certainly true for cardiac doctors and heart surgeons. As you likely know, it is imperative to obtain a four-year degree, and then proceed with medical school before you can become a physician. You will also need to complete a residency at a hospital or clinic in order to learn more about treating patients with coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and heart failure symptoms. As a health care professional or cardiac doctor in this medical field, it is your responsibility to provide patients with a proper diagnosis. This calls for serious medical education and training prior to actually dealing with heart patients on your own. You must focus your attention on the study of cardiology to enter this branch of medicine.

All doctors work with a variety of patients. However, you can also expect to work with numerous nurses and assistants in the cardiology field of health care.
