Psychiatrists

Mental illness stemming from depression and anxiety can be debilitating. Many people need the services of a licensed psychiatrist. One can become a psychiatrist by attending four years of college, followed by four years of medical school and then four years of psychiatry residence training.

Courses to concentrate on in college include science, biology, physics, chemistry, and psychology. After becoming licensed to practice psychiatry, such professionals may choose to extend their training and declare a specialty, for which they can receive board certification. Sub specialties can include forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, or psychopharmacology.

Psychiatrists follow a strict confidentiality code, and must possess a desire to help people. Superb listening skills are also crucial to have, as are good communication skills.

Psychiatrists, utilizing their training in psychotherapy and counseling, may open their own business or work within a large psychiatry practice. Services can vary by doctor, but the basics include patient evaluations, medication prescriptions, initial physical examinations, and counseling therapy sessions. They can also order and interpret laboratory tests, brain imaging studies, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs).

Some psychiatrists focus on one specific age group, such as pediatric or geriatric psychological treatment. Others offer services for a wide range of patients, from young to old. They may help people with their marriage problems, family conflicts, religious issues, panic attacks, and substance abuse. Some people may have issues with their health, such as eating disorders, while others need help curbing drug addiction.

The first person a patient typically comes into contact with is the receptionist, who can book appointments and give basic information such as hourly rates. Patients will then be seen by a licensed psychiatrist, which may involve ongoing therapy and counseling sessions to evaluate and treat mental illness regarding adult and child anxiety, depression, and other afflictions.

Psychiatrists must have the proper education, licensing and accreditation for counseling. When wondering how to choose the right counselor, be sure to look into the professional's background first. Call each counselor you are considering to find out whether the counselor and his or her staff are pleasant, helpful and courteous. Find out what associations or organizations, if any, the psychiatrist is a part of. Find out all contact information for the psychiatrist, get his or her hours, and consider whether the doctor is reachable at any time. Inquire how long the psychiatrist has been in business, and what his or her specialty is, such as marriage counseling or depression. Ask how long appointments last and what the rate is. You want to choose a psychiatrist who is easily available, will make time for you when you need it, and is comforting to speak with. Take a drive by the doctor's place of work. Appearance can tell you a lot about the professionalism of the psychiatrist. Inquire about type of therapy or counseling offered, such as marriage or couples therapy, psychotherapy, biological, clinical, forensic, educational, developmental, experimental therapy, family therapy, mental and depression therapy, reverse psychology, general psychology, child therapy, sports therapy, physical therapy, health therapy, positive thinking, abnormal psychology, criminal psychology, or adolescent psychology. Psychiatrists, therapists, and psychotherapist professionals may give their patients simple tests during the first visit to see where the patient's problem lies. All visits, advice, treatments and care are confidential. Check psychiatrists and counselors online to see what resources are available in your community. Ask your friends and family for recommendations on the psychiatrists they trust, or ask your doctor for references. Licensed psychiatrists can issue prescription drugs to help you feel better. You can then get the prescription filled at a pharmacy.
