Questions to Ask A Contractor

If you are looking to do some remodeling to your home, then you will likely need to hire a general contractor. General contractors can do remodeling and construction jobs on kitchens, bathrooms, pools, roofs and more. It is best to go over a list of questions with your construction company in the beginning so that issues arise during the project.

  • Are there any payment plan options available?
Doing home improvements can get expensive. If you do not have a ton of cash to spend upfront, your contractor may offer financing.

  • What kind of licenses and permits do you have?
Contractors need various licenses to do residential work, commercial building projects, electric wiring, road work, roofing and more. Never trust a contractor who can not produce the proper building permits.

  • Do you only charge for time and labor?
Some companies may only charge for their time and you will need to supply the tools and materials. Other companies may charge a little bit more but all equipment and materials such as concrete and paint are included.

  • I want to demolish my current home and build a custom structure, what would that cost?
No legitimate contractor should be able to give you an off the bat figure for a project of this nature. You will need to sit down and go over details with the contractor. There will likely be one price and special permits needed just to do a demolition of the home. Then the company should be able to give you a second estimate once you discuss what kind of specifications you would like in your custom designed house.

As you may know, general contractors deal with all sorts of residential home remodeling, commercial building, and demolition jobs. A lot just depends on the company you are employed with, and what area you work in. Since general contractors are needed all over the world, there are numerous opportunities to consider in this field. Typically general contractors are construction workers who have been in this business for a while. After all, there is a lot of experience and know-how involved with this type of job. Especially since general contractors are responsible for entire construction sites and projects. This includes electrical work, home improvement jobs, concrete pouring, and roof installations. If you are remodeling the kitchen of a restaurant, for instance, you must understand the layout, plumbing, and electrical system.
