Questions to Ask Before Getting a Puppy

A puppy can provide a lot of joy to a family, but they do require a lot of work! Before you take the big leap into puppy parenthood, there are a few things you might want to consider.

  • Do I have the time to devote to raising a dog?
    More things go into raising a dog than meets the eye. For instance, you'll have to think of where you want to put your new pet: will she be crate/cage trained? Do you live in the proper environment for this new addition? If you live on a busy street, do you have a fenced-in yard? Will you be able to train the dog to obey your commands and those of your family members?

  • What sort of things go into obedience training?
    Some people like to call in a professional, or take their dog to a class or school for proper obedience training. Here, he'll learn such things as appropriate behavior when around strangers and other dogs; simple agility skills; and you can get advice on aggressive behavior (if applicable) and proper training technique.

  • How can I "whisper" to my dog?
    "Whisper training" involves knowing the language your dog speaks, and being able to understand him and his needs. To train is a two-way street; if you want your dog to listen, you also have to listen to him.

  • What are the different types of training I may want to consider?

    Puppy lessons take place in an obedience school. In these programs, your pet learns to come when called, even if he's off a leash. Commands like sit, stay, and down are taught. Socialization is important. The young canine learns rules regarding proper behave in any environment, even at a groomers or boarding kennel. As you build a relationship with your younger pet, you'll be able to teach tricks. At the end of the course, you earn certification that your pet has completed the basic level.

They can take the most challenging canine and get him to obey simple commands. If you think your pet is unruly and simply cannot learn, call a whisperer.

    Canine obedience and agility classes provide an outlet for your pet's energy. In addition, a well behaved dog is unlikely to be aggressive or bite children or visitors to your home.
