Question to Ask About Carports

Carports provide a cost effective alternative to a garage to protect your automobile, truck or motorcycle from the elements. When interviewing a shed installation, sales company or contractor about adding a carport to your home, business or apartment complex, keep these questions in mind to make sure you get just what you're looking for.

  • What types of carports do you offer?
Two main types of carports exist. A canopy carport consists of a metal frame, typically crafted from aluminum or steel. The canopy protects the top of your vehicle, but the sides are still open. An enclosed carport is like an outdoor building that is separate from the primary building unlike most garages.

  • Are your carports prefabricated or custom-built?
Prefabricated carports are kits that contain the metal pieces for the structure. This type of carport is usually cost-effective, and you may even be able to assemble it yourself. Custom-built carports allow you to choose the specifications for the structure. This is useful if you prefer steel or another type or material, or if you want to leave extra space inside of your enclosed carport to allow for storage so it can double as a shed.

  • Do I need to obtain a building permit to have my carport erected?
Some local governments have regulations that require you to obtain a permit or license prior to building a carport. Some areas may not allow enclosed outbuildings on residential property, meaning that you'll have to opt for a canopy.

  • What fees do you charge?
If you're having a carport built, you may have to pay fees for overtime or for leveling the ground to make it suitable for the structure. If you're building the carport yourself, you may have to pay a delivery fee.

If you do not have a lot of vehicles you may not see the point in having a carport. However, carports can have other uses besides protecting vehicles. If you do not have a shed, you can use your carport as a shed replacement to store items. Using a carport for storage works best for units that are at least partially enclosed.

Another fun idea is to have a private picnic under your carport with you friends when it is raining. Since you are not completely inclosed inside of a building, you can experience nature without getting wet. It acts a the perfect canopy.

If you lack a garage, but love doing work on your motorcycle or truck, you can use your steel or metal carport as a work area. The steel or metal roof will keep your work equipment safe from the elements.

A prefab aluminum carport that is enclosed can make a cool outdoor office. If you are always looking for a place to get away from your kids and work on some paperwork or read this can be your answer. Make sure to measure your yard when picking the size of your prefab, compact carport.

Large business complexes and apartments and condominiums may use old carports on the complex as a storage area. Management can reserve this space to store pool equipment in the winter. Community tenants may even be given access to this area to store large items. Building management can add fencing and locks to keep items safe.

Before you destroy the carport on the home that you are purchasing because you want to put in a garage, think of all the others uses that it an have besides being a place to park a vehicle.
