Things to Ask Before Buying a Bike

Many people are turning to bicycling for fun and exercise. These two-wheeled vehicles move when you push the pedals making it an environmentally-friendly alternative to cars and trucks. All ages enjoy cycling around their neighborhood or on journey's to another state or country. Don't purchase a used or new bicycle from a dealer before receiving answers to your important questions.

  • What terrain is this bicycle capable of handling?
The frame and tires of the equipment determine its best use. Cruisers have wide, padded seats and tires with extra air to provide insulation against bumps. Mountain bikes have lots of gears to make it easier to pedal when going up challenging terrain and deep tread to grab in muddy conditions. 10 and 12 speeds also have lots of gears, but narrow tires suitable for road races.

  • How much weight does this frame and these tires hold?
Most frames and wheels hold up to 300 pounds without issue, but lighter racing bike models may not hold that much. It's important to ask about weight capacity before you purchase a model online or in a shop. If you'll be carrying camping equipment, make sure you consider that weight too.

  • What equipment do I need before starting a cycling trip?
Every rider needs a helmet that fits correctly. The Styrofoam padded helmets protect against head injury if a crash occurs. The helmet should be snug with the chin strap preventing the helmet from moving. Ask the shop or dealer's professionals for the best safety helmet for your needs. Elbow and knee pads are also helpful at preventing scrapes if you fall off.

Riding bicycles can be a healthy and fun way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Whether performing stunts on a dirt bike or participating in a road race, biking is a great cardiovascular workout that also works leg muscles, glutes and hips. To burn the most calories, pedal faster to pick up speed and increase your heart rate. Maintaining the rising heart rate will garner the most success. Pick up a tour bike to ride for extended periods of time. This allows you to bring any necessary luggage and encourages riding to work.

Look for cheap used bikes online. If you’re buying a bike to incorporate into an exercise routine, buying a new beach cruiser from a dealer may be a waste of money if you don’t follow through. An exercise bike has a frame that allows you to ride inside throughout the winter months and doesn’t require a helmet. Incurring damage to the frame or wheel is also more unlikely. If you’re trying to encourage your kids to exercise, purchasing a BMX bike from a local shop may be useful. The frame is lighter; the wheels are wider and allow the kids to utilize the bike for stunts, which can be more intriguing. If they are not interested in doing stunts, a mountain bike would be the best choice.

Your kids may be more interested in a mini bike or riding something that has a motor. This won’t offer nearly as much benefit in the realm of exercise. Depending on what bike you are purchasing, you may want to find a shop that specializes in that type of bicycle. These dealers will have all of the parts necessary and a rack for your car if needed for camping trips. Do the research, test the bicycle, and have fun!
