Tips for Hiring Live Entertainment
Whether it is a wedding, bar mitzvah, sweet sixteen or anniversary party, live entertainment makes any big event elegant and festive. Here are a few tips that will help you hire the best band or DJ for your special occasion:

Tip #1: Take the size of the venue into account
Your heart may be set on having a live band perform at your party, but if it is to take place in a space that doesn't typically accommodate live music, you might be better off with a DJ. Live bands not only have their instruments, but quite a bit of bulky equipment to set up. A live band can also be acoustically overbearing in a small space.

Tip #2: See the band perform
Don't merely audition the band; you won't get the full scope of their performance capabilities in just one or two songs. Take the time to see them fully perform before you decide to hire them. Because live bands can charge several thousand dollars, spending a couple of hours seeing what they can do might wind up saving you a lot of money.

Tip #3: If you are hiring a DJ, outline exactly what he or she will be doing
We all know that DJs play prerecorded music, but will your DJ need to act as Master of Ceremonies and make announcements? Does the DJ take requests or will he or she have a playlist etched in stone? Is the DJ amenable to adjusting his or her playlist? These are all questions that should be answered before you sign any contracts.

Regardless of your taste in music and live entertainment, you can find performers that you enjoy. Often these singers, dancers, and musical bands can be hired through talent agencies. In fact, it is common for these professionals to play at weddings, major party events, nightclubs, and even local bars. Just keep in mind certain inquiries when you choose to hire a band or musician. A few helpful questions to consider are listed below.

  • Are you available to play or sing on a specific date?
Always consider the date you'll need a local band or live entertainment group. You should inquire about the date as far in advance as possible, and make certain the right type of musical performer or band is available. It is a good idea to contact more than one agent or agency for assistance.

  • What rate do you charge for a specific time slot?
Depending on the live entertainment or musician you hire, the rate will vary. Be sure to find out what rates apply, and how long the band or performer can play at your business party, wedding reception, or social event.

  • Will you have your own instruments and equipment for the gig?
Find out if the local musician or band you hire has their own instruments and musical equipment to use at the event. While these live entertainment performers often have equipment, sometimes they do not. In this case, you would have to provide all musical instruments and electronic equipment required for the performance, and have it ready on time at the chosen venue.
