Questions to Ask a Beauty Salon

When scouting out a great salon, there are questions you might want to think about before taking the big leap. It's true that hair grows back and no mistake is really unfixable, but why not try everything in your power to land the perfect stylist the first time? This applies not only to hair, but nails as well.

  • How much will this cost?
Unless you're headed to a chain salon (think Hair Cuttery and Super Cuts), a typical hair dresser won't advertise their prices too openly. All too often women will get highlights or a perm, and once the service has been completed they're smacked with a huge bill. Ask your salon to let you know up front what the cost of your style will be.

  • Can I bring in my own color?
A nail salon will usually supply a huge range of polishes from which to choose, but that doesn't mean you have to stick to them! Ask ahead of time if you can bring in your own favorite color of polish.

  • Do any of your stylists have a specialty?
Not every hair dresser is created equal: Just like doctors specialize in specific areas of medicine, stylists can specialize in special areas of hair. Some are better with curly hair, some are better with straight locks; some know how to fix a bad cut job, while some only cut men's hair. Women should explain their style wishes to a beauty salon and see if there is anyone there who can deliver exactly what she wants.

If you have a passion for hair styles, consider opening your own salon. Women go to salons to get their hair cut, colored and even curled, so you will have plenty of business.

The first step is to decide what kind of hair studio you want to open. Do you want to be a salon and spa for women? Would you rather open a hair dresser for kids? Or do you see yourself as the neighborhood barber shop? You could even specialize in coarse hair, or boys' haircuts.

Next, you need to figure out what services you will offer, such as extensions, perms, dye and highlights. Your customers may want to color their hair drastically, changing from black to blond. Some customers want hair cut in crazy styles, so the more services you can offer, the better. They might also be interested in having their hair blown dry or straightened for a wedding, or brushed out after having dreadlocks.

Many salons offer other services, such as nail care and makeup, so you might want to hire a stylist for each. You could even offer spray tans or hair bleaching and waxing to open yourself up to a whole new client base.

Of course, the most important thing to remember when deciding to become a hair dresser is that you should be passionate about beauty and hair. You should have a background in cosmetology, and a degree in business can help you maintain your shop.

Opening your own salon can be an exciting career that you will be proud of for years to come.
