FAQs about Electric Generators
These questions are commonly asked when looking for an electric generator to provide backup power your home or business:

What is the difference between Kw and Kva?
A kilowatt, commonly abbreviated as Kw, is a measure of a generator's real power or electrical current based on the power of the engine. A kilovolt-ampere, often called Kva, is a measure of the apparent power on the generator's end. The Kva rate will be higher than the Kw rating. Those in the United States use Kw, while other parts of the world use Kva. However, many generators list both Kw and Kva.

How do I know what size generator I need?
You will need a licensed electrician to come out to your house or business to determine how much power you'll need. Generators come in all sizes, from 5Kw residential generators to gigantic 3Mw industrial generators. What size you need depends on how much electricity you use, which can be measured by an electrician. Buy the generator size that the electrician recommends.

Should I use a gasoline or natural gas generator?
This depends on how you are planning to use your generator. Portable generators are powered by gasoline because it is easy to carry. However, for permanent generators it is highly recommended to not use gasoline, as it is difficult to store and highly volatile. If something bad were to happen to the gasoline-powered generator, then you would have a serious fire explosion on your hands. Instead, it is recommended that natural gas be used for permanent generators. If a gas line is not an option, then diesel gas is preferable to using gasoline, because diesel is less volatile.

There are many different reasons people might need a portable electric generator. Some might need one as backup at home during an emergency or simply when the power goes out during a blackout. Others might need additional power for commercial businesses. Because each generator is manufactured to fit a specific need, it's important to know which model is a good fit for your situation. Keep these three basic questions in mind if you're thinking of buying a portable electric generator.

  • Where will you be using this generator?
Industrial generators have greater horsepower and wattage, will generally be much larger than a standard generator and are typically run on diesel fuel. They can supply energy to commercial buildings or power equipment out in the field. However, if you're simply purchasing the generator for your home as backup you won't need as much power. For instance, in the case of an emergency, you'll need a generator to run only essential utilities, such as basement pumps, heating or cooling systems, and refrigeration.

  • What is your desired power source?
Electric generators can be run on natural gas, propane, or diesel. Taking into consideration the cost and availability of those fuels will help you decide which make is best for you.

  • Are you eligible for a discount?
Electric generators are a valuable investment, but they're still expensive. Consider buying in bulk when purchasing for your business. For personal use, talk to the manufacturer or retailer about any applicable local discounts such as military, senior, employee, or civil service.

Once you've assessed your desired fuel source, basic power needs and financial budget, you'll be able to shop for the best deal on a portable electric generator for your needs.
