Questions to Ask About Funeral Homes

If a person close to you or in your family has recently died, you may face the responsibility of setting up that person's memorial and interment services. A funeral home can help by making arrangements that you may not have the time to handle. When you meet with the staff of such a facility, a list of prepared questions about the services you wish them to perform can come in handy.

  • Do you perform embalming services?
So-called restorative functions maintain the appearance of a deceased person as much as possible, preserving the decorum of open casket viewings and aiding the family's state of mind. Funeral homes should maintain morticians on their staff who can assist clients in this way.

  • Does the funeral home cremate?
Instead of interring deceased people in caskets, a mortuary could take an alternative path and cremate them. The ashes created through this process could be buried or stored away in an urn, or alternately could be scattered on the wind. If this is what you have in mind, you should first make sure that the funeral home you choose is appropriately licensed. Cremation requires special skills and qualifications for funeral homes.

  • Can a funeral home deal with memorial services planned to take place in a different location?
As one of the contingencies for which funeral directors should prepare, caskets might have to be shipped to another funeral home. After a body has gone through the necessary embalming process, it can be placed in a sealed container and shipped to the cemetery ultimately designated for services and interment.

Funeral homes provide many services, not only for the deceased, but also for the grieving family and loved ones. A funeral home prepares the body for burial and performs the embalming process on the deceased. Even when a body is scheduled to be cremated or embalmed, some tasks need to be done to improve the appearance of the deceased for display in the parlor and any open casket time that might be planned.

Funeral homes also take care of the logistics of planning a funeral. This involves working with the family on all aspects of the memorial. Services might be scheduled at the home, at the cemetery, crematorium or at a nearby church. Arrangements to cremate the body and dispose of the ashes have to be made. Ashes are generally either stored in an urn or scattered in memory of the deceased. The wishes of family, friends and the deceased have to be measured and weighed against one another. Some individuals make plans years before they die, while others leave the arrangement to their family members. Transport for the body and mourners has to be arranged, and most homes hire drivers for limousines and hearses. An appropriate headstone or monument has to be acquired for burials and situations when cremated remains are buried in a family plot. Funeral directors may also arrange for flowers and work with priests to make memorial arrangements. Choosing a casket or urn takes into account the deceased's wishes to be buried or cremated. Cemetery workers generally dig the grave. When the deceased is a veteran, military tradition has to be observed, and some funeral homes specialize in serving the families of veterans and active duty military members. Working at a mortuary, may also require you to provide grief counseling.
