Foster Care

Foster care is a government welfare program that involves placing minor children in temporary state custody until a permanent housing solution becomes available. A child may enter into foster care for a number of reasons: if the biological parents are dead or unwilling to provide support, if the child is given up for adoption at a young age, if the family is abusive, or undergoing treatment for substance addictions. If this happens, the child may become a ward of the state, and subsequently placed in the private home of a state certified caregiver, or foster parent.

The human services department employs a number of social workers, who are in charge of monitoring kids that have been placed in foster care. Until the child is legally adopted, reunited with their family, or transferred permanently under a legal guardian, all decisions involving the minor's welfare are made by the state's family court and child protection agency social workers. Once again, this system is designed to be a short-term housing solution until a permanent change is made. Whatever the ultimate outcome is, it must be in line with the child's best interest.

Foster parents are then responsible for the minor's day-to-day care, including any health problems or school attendance. These temporary caregivers provide food, shelter, clothing and nurturing. All foster parents require state certification in order to participated, and are remunerated for their services either by the state or charitable foundations. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, contact your local child protection agency for more information.

Foster care can be very rewarding. There are so many children that want to find a good home to live in. While the background of each child is different than another, they all want a mother, father and sometimes even a brother and sister to care for them like they would their own. Adult and children services will sometimes have to take a child or adult out of a home that is unfit to live in. They will then seek a foster family to care for the individual or family members. Adoption can be a long process, which is why there are foster families available. Living with different families over any period of time can make it hard to adjust. If you want to be a foster parent you should consider how long you can do it for to try and keep a steady environment for the child. Services for matching a family with a child will involve looking at the education, location, and background of both the family and the child. Most foster children will be on welfare in order to help with food, clothes, and medicine. This type of assistance is valuable to those that need help providing for the child. If you want to open your house up to foster children, you will need to make sure it is safe. The health of a child is a high priority. You can ask friends and family if they know of any families that have a foster child residing in their home and ask what agency they use. You will want to do a background check on the agency to make sure that they are honest and provide services to help you learn how to become a great foster family.
