Entertainment & Recreation Questions

When you want to find the best entertainment and recreation activities, a good place to look for ideas is on the internet where you can find listings of local events and happenings at community centers, amusement parks, and pools. If you’re traveling far, contact a travel agent for more information on what to do in the area. You can also simply browse the web to find out what’s going on in your area. There are many leisure resources online, as there are in newspapers and even on TV. But it’s a good idea to call before you go, to make sure the place you want to visit will be open when you get there.

  • Is this leisure destination family-friendly?
Wherever you visit, such as campground, national park, historic site, or movie theater, be sure to ask if little ones are welcome. Many places are just too scary or dangerous for kids, such as large amusement parks, while others are strictly for adults, such as lounges and movies. Some places just aren’t meant for the entire family, while others welcome everyone.

  • What hours is the park open?
Even national parks have certain hours for hiking and biking. Many close off their trails after sunset, for instance, but others are open for camping. Plan ahead so you know when to arrive and depart.

  • What sports do you offer at your youth center?
Many community entertainment and recreation centers offer anything from basketball and gymnastics to checkers and video game nights. They may be segregated according to age and ability, so be sure to call first.

Summertime entertainment can be easier when the weather is nice. On rainy days, you may have to get more creative when coming up with ways to amuse your family.

Make sure to keep an entertainment kit handy that contains art supplies and board games that your kids can use on a stormy day. Your kids can also surf the Internet and play online games. Allowing your kids to make up their own make believe games can be another fun activity.

You want to spend cloudy days having some leisure time and watching movies. You can even catch a matinee and bring the kids to a movie theater.

Some community centers may even have an indoor pool that can still be accessed on rainy days. There are also family fun indoor amusement parks that have sports, mini golf and live music on the inside. An amusement park like this can give your children some recreational time to run around and let out some energy.

You don't need to travel far to find youth or adult recreation. You can go to the local library where your kids can participate in a book club. On occasion, some libraries will event have activities such as book bingo. You can enjoy some leisurely reading time of your own while your kids play.

If you belong to a fitness center, there may be some indoor aquatic classes that you can bring your kids to on rainy days. More and more gyms are offering mommy and me programs.

Remember that with a little time and energy, a rainy day doesn't have to equal a boring day.
