Important Terms to Know about Water Softening and Conditioning Supplies
The following key terms should help you choose water softening and conditioning supplies and services:

Hard Water: Water with a high mineral content. Hard water often contains calcium and magnesium sulfates. Given enough time, these minerals can form a thick layer that clogs pipes. It can also cause calcification that damages pipes and faucets.

Ion-Exchange Resin: Ion-exchange resins contain sodium ions that bond to calcium and magnesium. This removes calcium and magnesium from the water so that it is no longer considered "hard."

Chelating Agent: Chelating agents are chemical additives that exchanges ions with the minerals in hard water. Adding chelating agents, also called sequestration agents, to the water, therefore, reduces the presence of these minerals.

Limescale: A chalky deposit often left on a surface when hard water evaporates. It can also accumulate inside pipes.

Lime Softening: Also known as Clark's process, lime softening removes calcium and magnesium ions by adding calcium hydroxide (lime) to the water. Lime softening can also remove dissolved organic matter and microorganisms from water, making it safe to consume.

Desalination: This term can refer to numerous processes that condition hard water by removing salts and other minerals. Some popular methods include vacuum distillation and reverse osmosis.

Vacuum Distillation: A water softening process that boils water in an environment with low atmospheric pressure. Lower pressure makes it possible to boil water at lower temperatures, so it uses less energy than simply boiling water to remove unwanted minerals.

Reverse Osmosis: A water softening technique that uses a membrane filter to remove unwanted ions and molecules from water.

Water purification, softening and conditioning are essential to pure drinking water, and water used in the home. Since soft water is much easier to use in the household, there are several different aspects of the industry that help customers to arrive at this goal.

First, there are home filtering and softening systems available in stores. For homes that have hard water piped to their sinks, showers, and washers, they can visit a water softening, conditioning, equipment and supplies store. Here, a sales person can advise on different filters that can help with water pressure problems, soap residue, and more. One of the basic products includes a simple screen that catches granular and mineral deposit. The sales clerk in the store should also be able to tell customers the difference between treatment systems that use salt and other minerals to clean the water, and ones that employ a reverse osmosis technique.

Second, there is the civic or industrial branch that filters water for the entire city. This is the water that is stored in wells or dams until it has been treated, and then is sent off through the pipelines to apartment units, homes, and commercial buildings. In these facilities, water undergoes an entire purification process. It is first sent through a basic filter to pullout grime and other deposits. It is then chemically treated with chlorine and other chemicals to repair the damage done by having the water stored outside. It is then sent though a system of valves, pipes and filters where it is cleaned of the chemicals, and then is ready to be sent off.

Whether it is tablets dissolved in water, or equipment and supplies used instead, successful treatments can be done a variety of ways.
