Hematologists take blood and plasma samples from patients. They study these samples in a lab to check for health disorders, cancer, tumor cells and rare conditions. They gather the clinical information and consult with the primary care physician. They will then inform the patient about the test results and decide best possible treatment plan.

To become a hematologist, one must earn their degree in medicine and license. Once this is complete, they enter continuing studies to earn a degree in hematology and oncology. It can take up to ten years of schooling to begin work as a hematologist. Even then, they attend regular conferences and workshops. This keeps them up to date with the latest equipment, disease prevention and medical advancements.

After earning a medical degree, hematologists enter a specialized training program that also covers coagulation, oncology and pathology. This is paired with rotations in a hospital or clinic with a licensed hematologist. If they plan to specialize in pediatrics, they'll work in that unit.

In these programs, doctors learn to identify blood diseases or disorders in the lab with examples including hemophilia, leukemia and sickle cell anemia. They learn how to come up with a treatment plan. These doctors learn about stem cell transplants. Most importantly, they learn how to talk to a patient about the results. They master techniques that help ease the patient's stress and uncertainty.

Most personal doctors refer you to a hematologist. For those with health insurance, it's likely you will need that referral for the insurance coverage. If you must find a specialist by yourself, look for those located at hospitals or medical facilities in the nearest city. Many conditions and diseases improve with early detection. Don't wait. Seek hematology care as soon as you need it.

American Society of Hematology
Our association is dedicated to the growing field of hematology across the nation. Offering both doctors and patients specific resources so you can learn more about the latest treatment options.

Hematology and oncology are important fields in the health care industry that are devoted to the pathology and prevention of cancers, tumors, and blood. Physicians who offer oncology and hematology services should have several years of training that makes testing and treatment possible for a variety of cancers and other diseases. Finding a doctor that is right for you often requires talking to several professionals, so you should be prepared to contact several offices. After you have gathered information about several physicians, though, you should be able to determine which ones are right for you. Contact the physicians and ask them about their training and treatment experience. You will want to choose a doctor that has several years of clinical training, journal experience, and a membership with an organization like the American Medical Society. Make sure they have a laboratory with automated analyzers that they can use to test your blood for signs of disease. Ask the oncology and hematology doctors how long their waiting lists are. Depending on the seriousness of your condition, you might be able to wait a while to see a doctor or you might need to meet with one immediately. Ask the doctors if they offer pediatric health care services if you need to take a child for treatment. If you have health insurance, you should ask the doctors if they accept your plan. If you do not have insurance, then you should ask them if they charge based on a sliding scale so that you can afford the treatment and tests you need.
