Important Terms Related to Natural Gas
Natural gas is an important source of heat and power for many people. The following are some important terms relating to natural gas.

Alternate Fuel: In regards to natural gas, an alternate fuel is something other than natural gas or compressed natural gas.

Alternate Fuel Capabilities: This is the ability of a residence or factory to run on something other than natural gas. If a location can only function using natural gas, compressed natural gas, propane, or another gaseous fuel, the location is not considered to have alternate fuel capabilities. This designation is important because locations with alternate fuel capabilities are more likely to be cut off from their natural gas supplies in the event of a shortage.

BTUu: A Btu, or British thermal unit, is a measurement for energy. In the case of natural gas, one Btu is how much heat is needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Curtailment: Curtailment is a lowering of gas distribution because of a shortage.

Feedstock: Certain chemical properties of natural gas contribute to the creation of items. Feedstock is natural gas that is used in its raw form to help create something.

Flaring: Flaring is burning natural gas. This must be done in a safe and controlled manner, and it cannot be for commercial or technical use.

Process: Process is natural gas that is used in appliances. Certain objects, such as boilers and turbines, are not included in this designation. Also, natural gas can only be considered process gas when there are no alternate fuel capabilities.

Processing: Processing is removing impurities from oil, gas, and natural gas. This is an essential step in preparing these fuels to generate electricity.

The industry for natural gas is closely tied with several other industries, such as vehicle fuel, power providers, oil drillers and working with other fossil fuels. Because of this, there are many different careers and companies that tie into the collection, production and use of natural gas.

Oil reserves and drilling are an important part of obtaining natural gas, which possesses a high percentage of methane in it. The gas becomes captured in caverns containing oil, and is released when the pocket is first broken into. Though when companies first began drilling into oil, they did not have the technique to capture the natural gas, they soon figured out a way to lay pipe lines and run the gas to the closest resource storage area. If there is no place for the methane to go, such as to a generator, a domestic facility, or to be used as fertilizer, it may be filtered back into the well, which is referred to as an injection well.

Another part of the natural gas industry is a power company. Power companies provide residential and commercial industries with it as an energy source, powering heaters, generators and even small things, like fires, a utility stove, and more. In fact, many home owners pay a certain amount for gas every month. The most common form of gas used to power each separate utility is propane, which comes out of filtering compressed material. If the supply is limited, though, it may be substituted for other clean burning products.

Another form that it can be transformed into is that of liquid. Liquidized natural gas is gasoline, diesel and other fuels that power cars, planes and other vehicles. For vehicles that use alternative forms of energy, they still need hydrogen in conversion vehicles.
