One of the most common careers associated with swimming instruction is a swim teacher. In order to teach swimming lessons, an instructor must be properly certified and trained. They are required to participate in and pass a water safety instruction course, where teachers are trained on the proper technique and form for each stroke, given CPR training, and also taught the requirements for students to move from one level to the next. In order to move from beginner to intermediate levels, the student needs to understand basic diving, free style and breast stroke techniques. To move from intermediate to advanced levels, the student needs to have mastered backstroke, butterfly, free style and breast stroke moves, and work on the intricacies of each form. Swim instructors must also know how to work with kids of all ages. A six month old baby will have far different requirements than a group of camp children that are just looking for fun swimming lessons in the pool. Many instructors teach classes for swim schools, though some offer private lessons at the student's home.

Another career that is closely associated with swimming lessons, though it is not quite the same, is a swim coach. Coaches usually have a background in competitive swimming, either for club teams or school teams. Every certified coach needs to undergo certain safety training lessons, as well as a class and test similar to that of a water safety course. Most importantly though, a coach needs to work well with the kids or adults on his or her team. The coach should devise workouts that improve the technique of each team member, while still learning to build endurance. Becoming a coach on a professional level takes years of building.

Children that don't yet know how to swim should find a class as soon as possible. Children can learn how to swim easily and are often excited about getting into a swimming pool with a group of other children. Learning different techniques, such as the free style, back stroke, butterfly, and diving is fun for anyone. There are different levels offered for swimming lessons. Once you have completed and passed a beginner course, you can step up to an intermediate and then an advanced swim class. Teachers will need to have been certified in order to teach swim lessons. You should ask to see their credentials to ensure you or your child is safe when in their supervision. Private lessons are available to those that want more attention when it comes to learning how to swim. Schools will sometimes have their own swim team and will have training in the morning before classes to teach the team. Swimming instruction is important for children to learn in case they are in a situation where they need to, at the very minimum, know how to stay afloat. To find an instructor in your area, you can ask other parents where they have sent their children to learn how to swim, look in a phone book, or visit a local gym. You can ask how much a swimming instruction class is and how many weeks it lasts for. Talk with the instructor and see if you feel comfortable with them teaching your children how to swim.
