Pet Shop Questions

Before you purchase your future pet or the supplies and products he or she needs you may have some questions. Get questions answered to the following questions that will make you and your animal happy. They may even lead you to your one stop pet shop.

  • What are the general hours of a pet shop?
Hours of operation vary by state but shops that run as chain operations in general open at 9am and close at 9pm, Monday through Saturday. Sunday hours of operation are generally from 9am to 7pm.

  • Can I purchase dog and cat supplies in bulk?
Wholesale stores stock supplies such as food and other pet products like shampoo rawhide chews and litter in bulk for dogs and cats.

  • What types of dog beds are available for purchase?
They will vary by size, design, comfort and cost. The most common are rounded, reversible or elevated; more sophisticated sleeping includes: designer, extra large, water, orthopedic, heated or biodegradable with eco-fabric.

  • Can I find environment friendly items at the pet store?
Yes, the idea of going green has also crossed over to the pet community. Many shops carry eco-friendly items for all pets. This is beneficial because many domestic pets deal with certain allergies to toys, clothes or food.

  • What type of bowl is best for beta fish?
The pet store experts may ask you to choose a plain 1½ gallon receptacle that is rounded in appearance. They may warn that only one beta should be allowed in each 1½ gallon receptacle because they are fighters.

"This store is great. The owner helped me find a dog food that my dog isn't allergic to. She also helped me find a harness to stop my dog from pulling. I am definitely going back to check out their beds made from recycled bottles. So cool to have something like this in our neighborhood. ..."

"Overall my experience here was okay. If you want a show quality (or even just high quality) grooming then this is probably not the place. In fairness I should add that I overhead the lady saying that their main groomer was out so the one filling in was over her usual work-load. Regardless though, the trim was mediocre at best with uneven spots and some clumps of hair left almost untouched. ..."

Pet shop workers need to have a knowledge of animals, but at the lowest level are simply retail workers. They are often young and may be in high school.

Grooming parlors and kennels, on the other hand, require expertise. Pet groomers may go to a formal grooming school, or start at a large store as an assistant and work up. When the shop has or is attached to a kennel or cattery, specific workers are hired. Their duties include cleaning cages and pens, exercising dogs and sometimes giving out medication.

Relatively few stores sell puppies or kittens any more. Workers are, however, expected to know about dogs and cats. Supplies and accessories for these animals are sold. Leashes and harnesses are important, as are toys and beds. Food is important, but pet food and cat litter are also commonly sold by supermarkets and discount stores. Such stores may also supply food and water bowls and some toys. Pet shops may also sell clothes and jewelry with pet themes or patterns.

Many shops sell fish. Aquarium stores specialize and are likely to offer koi and exotic fish, especially tropical fish. They also sell tanks and supplies. Workers need to learn to identify a variety of fish and advise on their care and feeding. Stores also sell birds and pocket pets.

Another important area is health and pest prevention products. Flea products represent a significant area. Workers have to know and be aware of the safety concerns associated with medications and treatments.

Wholesalers sell pet supplies, especially food, to those with large numbers of animals. This includes large boarding kennels, large breeders and shelters. They operate much like other wholesalers.

Pet shops are no longer a place to go get a puppy, although many advise on where to find one. But they do still sell smaller animals.
