Guns and Gunsmithing Terms
Whether you are a gun collector, a hunter or own a firearm for personal protection, it is critical to know the best ways to care for and maintain your weapons for both safety purposes and functionality. Gunsmiths build, repair and modify firearms and occasionally offer specialized services. Here are terms for a few of those specializations:

Pistolsmith: Pistolsmiths’ areas of expertise are the building, refurbishment, embellishment and customization of pistols and revolvers.

Custom Designer: Custom Designers fabricate firearms in accordance with a customer’s needs and specifications. Professional target-shooters often employ custom designers for highly accurate rifles. The custom designer is often considered the most highly skilled category of gunsmith.

Stockmaker: Stockmakers carve and finish wood stocks, often from walnut or maple. These are then fit to the receiver and the barrel.

Checkerer: Checkerers add small diamond-shaped patterns in the wooden surfaces of the stock to enhance grip. This specialty typically goes hand-in-hand with stockmaking and engraving.

Finishers: Finishers treat gunmetal with special chemical solvents to prevent corrosion.

Niche Manufacturer: Niche manufaturing gunsmiths specialize in individual gun parts, such as triggers, stocks, barrels and flint locks. They usually only sell to gunmakers and gunsmiths.

Antique Gunsmiths: These are gunsmiths that specialize in the restoration of antique firearms in order to maintain and even add to the value of a gun. These gunsmiths typically have extensive knowledge of particular firearms from a particular era, such as western double barrels or 18th century dueling pistols.

Armourer: A repairer of small arms and weapons; similar to a gunsmith but employed by the military or a police force.

If you have a gun that needs to be repaired or modified, then you will need the services of a gunsmith. If you are looking for a safe, reliable gunsmith, a good way to start your search is by asking around at a local gun club. Also, there are a few questions to consider before deciding to use a gunsmith’s services.

  • Is the gunsmith licensed?
All gunsmiths are legally required to be licensed. An improperly modified or defective gun can be incredibly dangerous, so for safety reasons it is important to make sure the store you use has qualified licensed gunsmiths.

  • Does the gunsmith specialize in a particular type of work?
The work of a gunsmith is highly complex and requires a vast skill set. Many gunsmiths choose to specialize in a specific area of repair or modification at their shops, like creating custom parts. You should look for a gunsmith that is either experienced in a variety of work or whose shop specializes in the type of work you need completed.

  • How experienced is the gunsmith with the type of gun that needs work?
Some gunsmiths work exclusively on rifles, pistols, or shotguns. Others are familiar with all kinds of firearms. Make sure the gunsmith you choose is familiar with your firearm and has substantial experience working with that type of gun. For example, if you need a paintball gun repaired you should find a store that specializes in repairing paintball guns.

  • How much will this cost?
It is a good idea to ask the gunsmith for an estimate ahead of time. If you are not sure if the quoted price is fair, you can ask members of your local gun club before deciding to use the service.
