Important Terms to Know About Silverware
Need new silverware? Head to a department store or specialty store to find the silverware you need depending on your budget and style. Perhaps you need a basic set of silverware for regular table settings. Or maybe you require knives and cutlery to accommodate your growing culinary hobby. Maybe you even need China and porcelain table sets for entertaining. Stores that sell dinnerware may also sell the items to properly clean and polish it. Here are some important terms to know about silverware:
Silverware: Cutlery that has been coated or plated with silver; includes forks, spoons and knives. Real silverware or flatware needs to be cleaned and polished with a cloth so as to avoid tarnishing.
Butterfly or Fan Knife: A type of knife that looks and acts like a pocket knife, with two handles that close up to conceal the blade within grooves.
Oyster Knife: Used for prying open oyster shells, this is a short, thick knife meant for this specific purpose.
Fish Fork: A fork with shorter tines than a standard fork, this utensil is often made of silver, as steel mixes with the fish flavor and can emit a bad taste.
Condiment Fork: Also known as a relish fork, this type of fork has only two or three tines. It’s very small, and accommodates the run off of extra fluid from foods such as relish, salsa and chutney.
Cheese Knife: A small knife featuring a thin handle and wide end. It usually encompasses several holes in the blade to prevent the cheese from sticking.
