Roofing Contractors

When planning to install, repair, or replace your roof, you will need to find a reputable roofing contractor skilled in these areas. Be sure to focus on someone with the skills necessary for your type of construction job, whether industrial, commercial, or residential in nature. Be aware of the types of questions you need to ask in order to ensure quality work.

  • What is your specialty?
Selecting a roofing contractor who has a background in the type of work you need done will go a long way in ensuring that you get quality work done on time. Seek out a contractor who has experience in what you need, whether that involves tar removal, shingle replacement, or flat tile maintenance. You can find out this information by going to the contractor’s website or calling him directly to learn if he has experience in, say, insulation installation, gutter repair, leak repair, or eaves replacement.

  • Where do you get your materials?
Most roofing contractors get their supplies in bulk from wholesalers. This savings is then passed on to you. Make sure your contractor has a reputable supplier for all of his metal, slate, and wood material, along with waterproofing and insulation materials, in the area. Many buy new, but inquire about used or recyclable materials if saving the environment is important to you.

  • Do you provide free estimates?
Many metal roofing contractors offer free estimates and quotes if you call and ask. They will come out to your home or business, inspect the building’s roof, get some specifics from you, and issue an estimate of what they think it will cost to roof your house. Get it in writing, including timelines and material costs on things like rubber, metal, shingles, drains, and tiles.

At any time, a problem can arise with the roof of a building. Leaks can spring, shingles can come loose, wooden beams can rot, or gutters may need to be replaced. Roofing contractors can be contacted to install new materials or to repair issues. It wasn't until roofing materials became more complex that the responsibility shifted from the home or building owner to a contractor. Slate was difficult to work with and required a craftsman who was knowledgeable about the material. The National Roofing Contractors Association was formed in 1886 to help educate those in the field of new methods and materials and to bring together commercial and residential workers under one banner. Roofing has since called for specialists, breaking down who does what by the items used in the making and repair of the house cover, but also the slope at which that cover lays. Metal is commonly used in steep slope jobs, while flat concrete and tar/gravel is often reserved for industrial buildings. Using metal for low slopes is not as prominent. Clay tile and shingles containing rubber are more prominent in house jobs. While each specialist can have his forte, there are certain skills all must be familiar with. Each worker must know how to properly install insulation, since proper insulation will cut energy costs later on. Each cover must have the proper drainage and waterproofing and the specialist must be able to work with eave construction. Proper maintenance is essential to the job, as is removal knowledge of potentially hazardous items.
