Divorce Question You Never Wanted to Ask

Marriage is a union that's normally entered into with high hopes for long future. Thought of lawyers, child support and alimony are the last things a newlywed couple thinks about on his or her wedding day. But the unfortunate reality of divorce can sneak up on even the happiest of couples, leaving their family and friends in shock. If you've found yourself facing divorce or custody issues, here are the answers to some questions you might have.

  • What is an annulment?
Annulments are are granted when a marriage should never have legally taken place, such as if the person is already married. They are also granted by the Catholic church to couples when one of the parties is not eligible for marriage in the church.

  • What's the difference between a separation and a divorce?
In the case of a separation order, the marriage is not dissolved, but the couple maintains separate households. Separated parties are eligible for alimony and child support.

  • Is alimony something different child support?
Yes, alimony is considered spousal support and is usually given tot eh party that made less money during the marriage. Child support is designed to help a spouse support their family after the divorce.

  • What's the difference between physical custody and legal custody?
Physical custody refers to a parents legal right to have their children live or visit with them. Legal custody refers to a parent's right to make decisions about the child's life, such as which school to attend.

  • Are there divorce options that don't involve lawyers?
Yes, mediation is a process in which the parties agree to have a third party arbitrator hear and decide on issues such as child support and division of property.

Many professional lawyers, attorneys, and paralegals work for law firms that offer divorce services and legal support. In this field, you typically get involved with couples or parents who have children, marriages that require annulment, and individuals who require alimony of some sort. This is a very busy field that requires law experts all over the United States, which means there is plenty of opportunity for lawyers assisting with divorce processes. Just be prepared to deal with child custody cases, alimony support money, and various court papers and documents, as well as legal separation advice, while working in this field.

There is certainly a degree of education involved with working for divorce services or a law firm that deals with marriage settlements. As an arbitration or mediation professional in this line of work, you must first complete law school and become a licensed attorney or lawyer. This way, you can properly help or assist couples with legal aid. After all, when you represent a client, you will need to be able to explain legal terms, child custody regulation, settlement agreements, family rights, and certain court papers that come up. When you are dealing with parents, you may have to help them come to an agreement on child custody, as well as alimony for the parent who does not work, or makes less money. How you approach each case will vary depending on the family or couple you are dealing with.

When you work for a divorce service, you will commonly handle legal documents and files, work with local courts, and assist married couples all the time.
