Questions to Ask Dental Hygienists

Patients rely on dental hygienists to perform a vary of oral health care services such as cleaning teeth, evaluating oral health, diagnosing abnormalities and disease, and creating preventive plans to maintain good oral health throughout life. Since dental hygienists play such an important role in dentistry, you might want to use some of the following questions to help you decide which ones can offer the services that you need.

  • What level of certification do you have?
Dental hygienists can hold associate degrees, certificates, bachelor’s degrees, or master’s degrees from schools that have been accredited by the American Dental Association. Those with master’s degrees usually have the highest level of education training.

  • Do you qualify as an Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner?
This is the highest level of training for a dental hygienist. Depending on the level of care that you need, you might want to choose someone with this high level of dentistry training.

  • Do you have experience using X-rays to diagnose diseases in the teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth?
X-rays are an effective way of seeing abnormalities, carries, and other problems before they become apparent on the surface of the teeth. Since they can diagnose problems early, X-rays play an important role in preventive care.

  • Are you qualified to provide cosmetic services?
Some hygienists can provide basic cosmetic services, such as teeth whitening, in addition to helping dentists fill cavities, diagnose diseases , and polish teeth to remove tartar and plaque.

Dentistry offices have to employ various types of professionals to make sure they give their patients all of the health care services that they need to prevent disease, keep teeth clean, and maintain attractive, white smiles.

One of the most important dentistry professionals is the dental hygienist. These employees focus on preventive oral health care. Preventive care allows patients to address abnormalities, cavities, plaque, tartar, and other issues before they cause serious problems.

Dental hygienists lean these skills from colleges that have dental health programs. They usually have to take several classes to learn about the various instruments, cosmetic procedures, polishes, and diseases that they will encounter on the job. For instance, they should learn how to use both soft and hard tipped instruments to clean tartar and plaque from teeth. They should also learn how to use x-ray machines correctly to get an inside look at cavities and other oral health care concerns.

Patients who visit the dentist might not know the extensive level of education that the hygienists receive before they can begin their professional careers. The truth is that these employees have a wealth of information about gums, plaque deposits, fluorides, fillings, and periodontal disease. Undergoing this amount of training helps them provide all of the preventive treatments that most patients need.

Before dental hygienists can begin working on patients, they need to pass examinations that certify them as professionals. A certified hygienist should know how to recognize a cavity, provide fluoride treatments, and instruct patients how to take better care of their mouths.
