  • What type of work do you do primarily?
    Many asphalt contractors specialize in residential or commercial projects. They may work in niches like masonry or stamped patios or large concrete parking lots. Others deal primarily with laying blacktop, tarring and striping highways and streets. Look for contractors that specialize primarily in the type of work you need to have done to assure they have the right expertise.

  • With what materials do you have experience?
    Likely, you have some idea of what type of materials you want to use for your patio or driveway. Select a contractor who has previously worked with that particular material. This is particularly true when dealing with expensive materials, such as stone patios.

  • What cost and time frame do you anticipate for the job?

    Some folks enjoy working with their hands outside doing harder contractor work. If you are one of these people, you may wish to consider working in the asphalt and concrete paving industry.

    Working with asphalt requires a decent amount of training since the material is hot and safety precautions need to be taken. Should you join a paving or construction company that works with the material, you will learn how to operate the machinery and how to adapt to common issues that may occur on the job. You will learn procedures for dealing with tar, how to perform proper striping, and how to seal cracks with a new coat of blacktop. Be prepared to do some excavating as well. After you've gained more experience, you'll be put on larger jobs like a highway resurface, cementing a parking lot or street, or paving a customer's driveway. You may be trained in how to make stamped patterns for more artisan and private jobs, like for coating driveways and patios.

    If you decide you'd rather start your own blacktop contractor business, you'll have to be familiar with business practices, tax laws, and managing employees. Each state has different laws about licensing for concrete and asphalt contractors, so you'll have to get the proper license for where you intend on operating. Since you'll be doing the ordering of the materials, you'll need to know the right stones to purchase, what cement mixture works best, and the like. Since asphalt is used in the masonry field for roofing shingles, you must be sure that you are purchasing the correct product.
